790s were my first real pair of floor standers that I purchased along with a Hafler 945-9180 combo. The 790s were decent for what I paid for them but in my room they lacked clear bass. It was always boomy and mushy.
That is when I started spiking my speakers on top of an inch and a half thick granite slab. Made an amazing difference for me.
What do you plan to drive them with? Of course better clean power will make them sound better than a mass market receiver.
Follow Ups:
I am still waiting to re-foam the rear 4.5 inch driver. After this I will probably use them for surround sound I might try them for fun with my Bryton 4bst to see how they sound but will quickly go back to my Yamaha NS 1000 Ms for stereo.
I also have the 490s and find them smooth with some good detail.
John
The Bryston will allow you to see exactly what they can do. You may be surprised.
I might be.
Like I said, I need to refoam the two little speakers in the back (pain in the ass)first but after that they will be like new.
Having lived with the M-490s for some time (and liking them) I have high hopes these will sound just as good.
Regards,
John
They are great speakers in my opinion. They use the same pure titanium hybrid tweeter that the M series utilized. Smooth operators, detailed but the kind of speaker that you listen into a little vs having the detail thrown in your face.
Expansive stage vs pinpoint imaging- par for the course with bipolars.
490 was a damn good monitor too. Refined for its price point.
Have fun.
Thanks Les,
I think you said it right. It has detail but not metallic sounding for a titanium tweeter. Of course
Im talking about the 490s as the 790s are not ready yet.
Do you still own any of these speakers ?
No, I actually never owned them. I had m7 and m5s. I was very familiar with them however, my friend had 490s based on my recommendation. I auditioned the 790s numerous times. Both had a stellar reputation in the audio shop I was frequenting at the time.
Thanks for the reply,
My 790s still need to have the rear driver re-foamed. Not many choices in Montreal.
I read somewhere in audokarma that someone used OEM drivers for the rears. I wonder if this
wont throw the balance off. It would be an easier thing to do than wasting time looking for
someone competent enough to re-foam my speakers
I will look back for your update. Good luck with refoam job.
