Like top of the line equipment is not sold with blatant lies?!!!
Like tweaks are not sold with blatant lies?!!!
Too funny!
Whenever someone here objects to the sacriligious prices of higher-end equipment, that person is always met with a "brothers keeper?" argument.I say that a more economically challenged person deserves the same right as a well-off person to believe in their heart of hearts that their speakers sound subjectively great whatever colour the van was.
Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!

"White Van" is the name of a scam where someone hustles you into buying fake goods. I see it as rolling back an odometer, a contractor doing work below code, or any bait and switch. There's nothing defendable about it.
Next, you're using this as an argument to bash the high-end community. First of all, there are always going to be exaggerated claims and overhyped items, but at least the audio buyer walks out of the store in possession of the very items he chose and paid for. The white van customer leaves believing something very different from cheap Chinese speakers is in those boxes.
I don't absolve the buyer of making a bad decision in either case, but I don't see the sales tactics as being the same at all.
I have never seen the creme made by Mrs. May Belt from the UK sold in a parking lot.Don't force me to ask what exactly are the materials used in your mega-buck ICs.
The list of well-accepted and well-loved audiophile approved frauds is long...

I still think you're confusing two different issues. Let me put it this way:
If I sell you a box of gold and you get home and it's a bunch of rocks painted gold. I've ripped you off. If you never notice it's not gold then I guess you're happy.
If I sell you a box of rocks for the price of a box of gold and you agree, then you've ripped yourself off. If you wanted expensive rocks, then I guess you're happy.
Anyway, if someone out there is happy with a $15 Yorx boom box, then fine. But that's not really what Audio Asylum is about. And, we do discuss cheap Chinese speakers when appropriate. The Dayton B652 and Micca PB42X are both discussed down the page.
Top of the line equipment may be sold with lies but they aren't nearly as blatant most of the time. Audio is subtle so you gotta be able to handle keeping a somewhat open mind. You risk being taken advantage of. I don't think there's any way around it. White van speakers are crap sold with lies. There's no ambiguity.
Imagine how boring the internet would be if folks were as civil here as they are in person.
