In Reply to: RE: NHT XD System - any direct experience ? posted by beppe61 on March 13, 2015 at 04:12:27
Hi, beppe:
I use a set as my office system and imagining anything better for my purpose is difficult. The only set-up I've heard that might come close is a well tricked out Blue Sky system, but I've never been able to compare them.
Good luck,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, thanks a lot for the very valuable reply.
Any issue of integration of the sats with the single sub ?
How far from the system do you usually listen ?
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

So, beppe, bear in mind that this is my office system. Placement is majorly constrained (room is about 10' x 12' x 8' and full of books, cabinets, &c.. That said, the sats are about 7' apart and toed in to face me (were the room larger and the speaks further away and apart, I might slightly "over-toe" following Spencer Hughes's advice which has served me so well in my living-room system). Each sat is 5'-6' away from me. The remarkable thing here is that the Xd seems not to mind, though with such distances, a few feet off in sitting position makes a big difference in sound -- I analogize to the phenom of a macro lens vs. depth of focus. But I've no doubt that in a larger room with more space, tolerances would be much greater -- this is no panel, there is no vertical venetian blind effect, and images "float" as well as those of any speaker I've ever heard.
The sub is under my desk about 4' forward of my feet. It gets some reinforcement there (not sought -- sub placement was for cosmetic purposes only) but there are a few adjustments on the amp/equalizer to compensate. I hear NO seam at crossover; integration is superb.
For a more extended description, see John Atkinson in Stereophile. Though I cannot recall if he did the whole review or just the technical measurements, his remarks on the occasion accorded particularly well with my own observations of the (for me) great Xd.
Best,
Jeremy
Hi and thanks a lot again for the very interesting advice.
The fact that you " hear NO seam at crossover; integration is superb " is very important to me in general because i am quite sold on the sats plus sub/subs concept.
Moreover my interest about digital x-over and eq is quite higher these days. Very interesting option.
Thanks a lot again.
Kind regards,
bg
You are most welcome. Keep in mind, though, that my result derives from my room -- in a larger room, you may have to move the woofer around a bit to achieve a similar result. But I think that's true of speakers/rooms in any case.
Best,
Jeremy
My commentary, John's measurements.
Apologies, KAL -- aging memory impeded by flu.
Best,
Jeremy
