if the RS 1B and the IRS Betas were such great speakers. Why have the orgnial owners sold them
Follow Ups:
I am the proud original owner of Infinity IRS, & RSiiib's as well as second owner of Genesis 300's. I bought the Genesis 300's because my woofers on my infinity's needed refoamed & could not find someone qualified/skilled to my liking. I finally found that Watkins (the makers of the the dual cone 10" woofers) were still in business & were able to refoam them. I can tell you the IRS beats anything out there today. One can purchase new IRS speakers (rebranded & Genesis Dragon for $450,000). Anyone who sells their Arnie Nudell developed Infinity's is just foolish!

Not everyone- these are coveted by collectors for openers...
RS1B. Purchased in 1985 when first came out. Crossover was updated by manufacturer just before brought out Betas. Love the speaker. Have large room with high ceilings. Use VTL 300 on the mid tweeter panel. One EMIT went out but repaired by Bill Thalman. Have listened to almost all the competition and none came close without spending well over $100,000. I am actually auditioning the Legacy Audio Aeris tomorrow. RS1Bs excell at soundstaging, dynamics, bass. Not as transparent as the top Vandys but they cannot play as loud not fill a large room. Still if your room is of average and you do not turn up the volumn the top Vandys are worth a listen.
The Infinity IRS Betas are better I have owned both. its shocking how some audiophiles set them up This set up is all wrong

I agree. I heard the Betas at Lyric in NYC when they first came out as set up by Mike Kay. They were incredible but the RS1Bs were around $5500 and the Betas over $10,000 at that time (late 80s). Kay was an incredible set up may as well as their best salesman and I believe the owner of Lyric at that time.
I also go to Lyric I heard the RS1B they using Mark Levinson 4 mono blocks Mr Kay had stock in Levinson so he would push ML. I heard the 4.5s at CSA audio in NJ with Audio Research tube amps. With the tube driving the 4.5s sounded better in terms of Sound Stage the speakers disapeared. One must use tube amps for the 4.5s RS1B and the Betas for the midrange/tweeters
Lyric had A used betas in the window years ago $4.500 Exc condition Stereo Exchange also had A used pair near mint $6.000

Still have my RS1B's and still love them. They do require a pretty large room to sound as they can. But when they do have the room, they really sing. Probably will never sell them. I have other systems in the house as well so I have other places to experiment. Never have had a problem with any of the drivers but have purchased a couple emims as back up just in case.
They sound best with Tubes for the mid & tweeters
Let's face it, short of a trust fund, being an md, lawyer or entrepreneur, most audiophiles would not have the means to purchase such systems until the kids are out of school and married off. That would be 50 or > .
.
You are correct. I purchased my RSIIIb's when I was 20, IRS when I was 28 & my Genesis G300'S when I was 40. I am now 50

I owned my Infinity RS1b speakers for over 20 years. It is a great speaker. I never had a problem until the end when I blew a midrange driver. They are not being made anymore so I had to find a used EMIM. I was concerned after so many years that it might be a continuing issue.
And, quite frankly, after 20 years I wanted to try something new. Part of the fun of the hobby, I guess.

...anyone updates their system.
To buy something newer and better.
Firstly? They're pretty darn large systems - maybe they don't fit well in a new room?
How about woofer foam rot? Those Beta columns would take quite a bit of time & effort to repair when needed.
Again for the Beta? The EMIM midranges could be quite fussy.
Last reason? How about audiophilia nervosa? :)
The EMIM midranges can be found and also be repaired. I found 2 for the IRS Betas
