Why not purchase the kg4s. They can't be that expense. Try them and find out if they work in your setup. I had a pair and they are a cheap alternative to the higher end Klipschs. If a pair of quality Fortes comes your way it shouldn't cost that much to purchase those as well.

oh if it t'were so easy! You am hearing from a married man with a wonderful wife, but a wife who points out that my toys - electronics, cds, lps, books, and sundry tchotchke - are taking over the family room. Would be nice, but I simply cannot purchase speakers on a whim to see if I dig them and then purchase a step up pair. Moola and space reasons preclude this.
I can go for a speaker with a moderate footprint. My Trente's, if you are familiar with these delights, are more of the bookshelf size on Reynaud stands. My listening room is approx 25 ft by 50 ft, rectangular. Not ideal, but there just aint no other room I can take over. The JR Reyanaud trentes are wonderfully transparent yet on the polite side. I listen to classical, jazz, avant garde, very raucous rock, glitch and other noisy to ambient works on the techno side.
I would love to get a pair of Fortes, but nothing here has come available on craigslist, and the great deals on ebay are mostly for pick up only in very distant states.
I guess my essential question is: am I romanticizing what Klipsch Heritage series can provide as a contrast to my very efficient and detailed trentes? Will it provide an entirely diff sonic signature than the Kg4 or Fortes? What I am looking for is heft and detail. I guess I could get a subwoofer, but I know squat about them. I'm inclined to think they are providing a way out of reality bass that is pure carbs and color but not really occuring in nature. Akin to those horridly over loud and peristalsis encouraging subwoofers in cars that cost less than their stereo systems.
Am I looking in the wrong area with Klipsch. People talk about their downside of being bright and in your face. Would a Heresy 1, which I take to be roughly the same footprint as my Trentes make a big sonic difference?
I deeply appreciate all of your comments. You folks have always been a big help to me in my mithering indecisiveness in the past. Thanks in advance
You say your room is 25x50 ft. That is rather large for what you might get from the kg4s. There are other versions such as the kg5.
Klipsch also made the klf10, klf20, and klf30 speakers. I owned each of those. They could easily fill your room if you could find a pair. I did see a pair of kg4s on Ebay for around $400 and the owner was willing to ship them. You might want to keep searching until something becomes available.
thanks. saw them on ebay as well. local sale has them at a little over 2 bills and they look to be in great shape. but i am more and more convinced that fortes, given responses here, are the way to go. although a couple are avaiable on ebay, one reason or another has me hesitate on serious inquiry. I can wait. its not urgent, of course. what do you and others consider a fair price for fortes and upwards?
I have only had stock Klipsch, I owned Heresy III and don't think they will do what you are looking for, I thought the bottom octave dropped off fast. I biamped them at one time and the midbass hit like a monster with a solid state amp.
The Forte I owned had a nice balanced response with big bottom end. You might also consider the Chorus.
I bought the KLF model with 10's and returned them the distortion level with an amp with power was terrible and from the large port in back you could see from the lack of bracing, crossover quality or insulation it was not Klipsch's finest model.
Though out of your budget the latest couple of Reference lines I thought was very good with much smoother horns than in the past as well as better balanced sound.
Something that may be in your price but giving up some efficiency but in my opinion would meet your needs better than Klipsch are the JBL Studio or LS series. The horn drivers are way better, smoother with more detail, and they are JBL so the bass is there. The LS were sold through installers and specialty retail, the performance for the price was outstanding. Some of the best horn drivers I've heard in consumer speakers. I should say in that price range, the JBL's upper end Array is obviously better.
I owned a pair of Zu Audio for a while, Omen towers with Super Fly drivers, I couldn't get really low bass in my set up but they were very impressive at how loud they could play and sound as clear as they did at lower levels. There would have to be toward the top of my list of distortion free speakers.
If they would have been around when I had my CJ MV60's I would have considered Golden Ear powered towers, let their amps heft the bass and the CJ to bring the rest.
Thanks Mr. Peabody. Would you please indicate what JBL studio or LS you're referring. I take it these are vintage?
