Hello All,
I am new to the forum and would really like a bit of advice regarding some speakers.
I was lucky enough to be able to acquire for free a pair of Jim Rogers JR149 speakers... I understand that this is quite jammy?
They were pretty beat up and stored in a cold garage for many, many years.
After a general clean and purchasing some new foam covers, I've noticed that the large drivers are distorting a fair bit once they're turned up... I'm not pushing them very hard at all but the distortion is very noticeable.
I quite like the look/sound of these little speakers and I'm a sucker for anything old/unique.
Can anyone recommend a set of drivers to replace the current knakard ones? or offer any advice at all?
I will add that I'm not really a massive audiophile. I have a home studio set up and record/mix a fair bit of music and have a basic understanding of that area... But this side is all new to me but very interesting (so please be soft with me)
Any advice, help or anything would be really appreciated as I would like to restore them to their former glory.
I am running them through a kenwood ka8100 if this helps?
Thanks in advance,
Stephen

They might be able to update the speakers for you. And the updated speakers will have some pedigree, since Stirling is THE Rogers (brand) expert in the UK.
This will not be cheap, but you will have a one-off updated classic.
Douglas Stirling is the contact.
you won't be sorry.

Before you replace anything, you might want to try flipping the driver. The KEF 110 woofer has a pretty heavy magnet and a stamped steel frame. Sitting around so long, the baskets may have sagged causing the voice coils to rub. Flipping the woofers can often fix this.

Try pushing the cones in without the speakers being powered up. See if there is scraping. The B110s commonly has problems with cone sag, due to the spiders ageing. You can get the spiders redone by a competent speaker repair.Sometimes the voice coils have problems and need to be replaced.
I would suggest you try to get them repaired to keep the sound as close to the original. The repair costs should be less than the cost of a used pair of B110s on ebay. If you go this way you have to get the right spec. of B110s.
Apparently there are some replacements available as indicated in Terry's post below, but the value of the speakers will not be the same.
BTW, I had a set of JR149 Gold models with matching powered subwoofer. I redid the crossover, as per revisions noted on the web. I made an outboard crossover box and ran this to the speaker, leaving the original in place. A nice set of speakers, although I prefer the LS3/5a more.
YMMV

Hi Terry,
Thanks for your reply. I will look into getting them replaced.
They are fantastic little speakers. they are noticably more quiet than other speakers i own of the same size though? Is this just they way they are or do you think this will be rectified with replacment drivers?
And thanks for the heads up Kal... currently scouring through Ebay.
cheers guys :)
Stephen
Since they are clearly damaged, it is hard to know what aspects of the sound are due to that or to inherent qualities. They were nice little speakers and the B110s have served me well in many applications.
I remember the JR149 very well and quite liked them. In fact, if I recall correctly, some preferred them to the Rogers LS3/5A - a legendary small monitor. Anyway, to your particular problem: I think you will have to replace those KEF B110 woofers. I think KEF stopped production of the B110 years ago but, fortunately, there is a modern equivalent made by Falcon Acoustics (see link below).
