What was lacking with the Forte - SET combo? Have you tried Forte's with the PP KT-66 amp? I listened Fortes with the CJ CAV-50 some years ago, and I though they matched well. Maybe Forte requires more power, the PP amp would be able to deliver?

I last used the Klipsch Forte on a similar ST-120 amp with upgrades. I also use the Klipsch Forte on other tube amps I upgraded for myself & others. I hear a lot of tube amplifiers when rebuilding & upgrading for others. The modified Klipsch Forte were excellent. I also liked the darker sounding ADS that have an interesting soundstage. The JBL L300s are a superior speaker- no question about that. Not near as dark as the ADS and more refined than the ADS or Klipsch.
So, perhaps I may find with help a speaker that performs in-between the Forte & JBL L300. I will consider current manufactured speakers too.

I'm not real sure on the vintage. You may want to look at Zu Audio speakers, very high efficiency. They have like a 60 day audition with option to return. Golden Ear makes speakers with powered bass and I believe the smallest tower may be close to your budget, they do sound good and it's easy to find glowing reviews.
I heard the Zu Soul Supreme and I would take modified Fortes any day of the week.

What was the problem and what was driving them?
I had Zu Omen with Super Fly driver. I also owned Forte. The Forte is definitely better balanced in frequency response although the Zu played higher while the Forte went lower. I give detail to the Zu and they play louder while remaining as clear as lower volume, probably better than most any other speaker I've heard. I just couldn't get low end bass from them in my room. I drove them with Conrad Johnson push pull though and just figured maybe they do better with SET. I also eventually grew tired of the Zu's super tweeter. My Forte wasn't modded. The Zu are really designed for SET and if you heard them with solid state it wouldn't be their best showing for sure.
Vandersteen 2CE ?
Not even close.

?
I haven't heard any ADS speakers in 20 years. But I admit the pair I did hear at an audio store sounded very good.
