unless you really can't afford it, get the T9. In my opinion, one 8 inch driver (on the T5) isn't going to do all that much, where with the T9, you're really seeing what it's all about to have a subwoofer. Don't forget, it's a SUBwoofer for 2 channels. It's not supposed to take over the bass altogether, that is what your main speakers are for. Also, you'll get better results running your main speakers full range, whichever model you get.
If you're going to invest in a unit, though, you'll really be happier with the bigger model in terms of what it's doing for the overall sound.
However, it also depends on how big your room is, what you hope to achieve with the thing, etc., and how much time and effort you want to put into positioning.
And not to muddy the waters, but there's a new S series as well, which is probably costlier than the T series.

That is going to put it at over $1200. WAF $ wise I may have to scale it back to the kit options at parts express. I was looking at the 10" titanic MK4 sub kit.I already have a Keiga KG5230 300watt plate amp from Madisound. I could just find a driver and model a box.

that's a tough call.
I bought an REL Storm for $1700 retail in 1999 (that's probably $2500 in today dollars). I didn't keep it, but if I had known what I was doing, DYI migh have been a better option, if only because if you actually build something yourself, you're more likely to be attached to it.
The retail solutions, I have learned, are more about the company making money than about what you need.
So you decide.
Real bass does, though, require power and driver volume.
You could start with the T5 to see what it can do...probably you have the option to upgrade at some point.
If you have the balls, DYI though.
Or just buy more CDs for the money. ;)
Above all, have fun.
