Everything I've read about these speakers so far suggests that they are very placement sensitive. Moving them a bit closer to one or more room boundaries could help tame the treble by increasing "warmth" or mid-bass output.
Keep on fooling around with them and let us know how things turn out.

I thought about that after I posted. In fact, these are more or less out in the middle of a room - backed by an open stairwell. I would get better output from the ports if I had a wall to back them up. I'd put them in the main system to test the theory except those speakers are happily out in the middle of the room as well :0
Smaller rooms where the LS50's have only a few feet of space on all sides is best. Put them in the middle of large room and you'll be wishing for a pair of subwoofers.
