I want to make a pair of "snappy" passive subwoofers for my music system, driven by a 50 watt per channel external amp. I have the really low bass spectrum covered 30hz- 20hz, with an active sub... but what I want to hit is that "impact region" the "punch in the gut" area.. I am guessing this is 100hz - 50hz range? My speakers do cover this range but I feel they could use a boost, I am just not totally feeling the "snap" from the drums.. they sound great but would like a bit of impact..
I do not have a ton of experience with driver selection and enclosure types, but some basic guidance may be all I need..My first off hand guess is that a nice 6.5 inch driver in a .8 cubic ft. sealed enclosure or PR enclosure, might be the way to go for what I want. ...was looking at this driver from madi-sound.. is it adequate?

I have a good quality electronic cross over that will allow me to adjust the lower range and volume of the amp so I can dial that in, but I think I may need something to cut off the high frequency, if 100Hz seems like the right point at which to cut this off for an 8ohm driver such as this, would 1.2mh inductor be the approx value I am after..? would it still be wise to cap off the super low range 45hz and lower?
any ideas on a design for achieving what I am after, or warnings not to try this, would be would be greatly appreciated..
thanks
J

If you want more "punch in the gut" sound, just use a little EQ to bump up the range of about 100 Hz - 250 Hz. This is where the 2nd, 3rd and 4th harmonics are for low fundamentals (bass notes). It'll add "impact" and "punch" and "definition" to your low end sound.

Color me perfect?
The "slamish" effect you are looking for may be the balance between your amp and speakers. Not just the speakers.
If you want more 100hz-ish slam. Look into tube amps. Higher impedance the really pushes those woofers around. Even those cute 6" jobs.
or if you are cruising madisound look into their A26 kit.

"Slam" out of a 6-7" woofer? Really?
And yet despite the look on my face, you're still talking.
Yeah, but ya gotta love that can do attitude ;)That's why I suggested the Seas A-26 kit with the 10" woofer. Wonderful speaker and good dynamics in that range.
6" woofers and slam should NEVER even be in the same paragraph.

Sorry but I use SEAS Froy 3 speakers with 2 4 1/2" drivers that go to mid 40s with nice slam(not at super high levels, of course). It's in the design of the driver/box combo and how these relate to interactions with the crossover.
...is certainly open to interpretation. Low volume listening doesn't constitute "slam" in my book! Gimme a couple of 15" woofers with 1K of amp behind them at about 100dB. Now that's "slam"!
And yet despite the look on my face, you're still talking.
Yes, but look at the quality difference between most commercial drivers and the ones in your Froy.
Also amps have a lot to do with it.

You need good parts and good design to get good performance. What's new? Poor 12" drivers won't do a good job.
Yep, a high quality 7" driver can out perform a 12".
My SR-71's prove that. Hooked up to a tube amp it is surprising how much actual bass you can hear.
