Of course every room poses its own acoustical situation. Generally speaking, by placing the subs closer to the listening position the timing or delivery of the extra low frequency improves greatly. this is something no amount of EQ can remedy.

What exactly do you mean by "timing" and "delivery"?Time-wise, unless he placed the subwoofers the same distance (or actually, a bit closer) to the listening seat as the main speakers are they won't be naturally time aligned.

Other positive result, by placing the subs facing eachother on the side walls, it creates a node just in the listening area, allowing me to use less amplification, wich allows for less standing waves in the corners and I bet less bass energy transmitted to the apartments upstairs and downstairs. I guess my neighbours appreciate... ^^
