from an article "Preventing Hearing Damage When Listening With Headphones"
Follow Ups:
This is the most important point being made in the article.Over the course of an hour or so of headphone listening the ears can become fatigued. As the ears become fatigued they become less efficient. As the ears become less efficient, it can seem as if the playback volume level is dropping down. The temptation is to turn the volume up higher and higher in compensation as time goes by.
People who listen to portable devices are particularly susceptible, IMO. I think they imagine that the perceived change in volume level is entirely due to device battery levels getting low, so they keep cranking up the volume. Eventually, hearing damage results. The solution to the problem is to take a 15 minute break from headphone listening every hour or so. After the ears rest they will recover their sensitivity and the music will seem loud enough once again.
Start your headphone listening session with a reasonable volume setting and keep it there. Take a break for 15 minutes every hour or so. Resist the temptation to turn the volume level up over time.

Headphone listening reduces the recording venue and the recorded sound to an artificial, hi-fi quality I dislike.
Actually, I hear some of that in every system - headphone or otherwise...
That said, headphone listening is not for everyone. Why should it be?
I was amused by the notation that says:
70 dB fortissimo singer 3 ft. away
Must be some singer. Now, my voice is not large by operatic standards but according to my SPL meter, I can do 90 dBa at 1 meter fairly easily.

There are some technical errors in that document but I could not access any way to notify them.
In general, the advice is good.
What are the technical errors,Kal?
Thanks!
Details about the middle and inner ear. I was finally able to send a post to the site.EDIT: However, they seem not to be responsive at all.
