What should I look out for buying my first sub. The speakers I am using are Wharfdale Denton 80th anniversary stand mounts. 5" woofer. The room size is 15x23 ft. Thanks

First and MOST important is a good powerful plate amp. Even is you are listening to low level music - you do need a good plate amp!!!! Been there is spades!
I've found that many of the brand name subs will charge you an arm and a leg for some very average stuff.
Look into Parts-express kits. don't be fooled at the prices. Excellent drivers and plate amps. Get at least 300watts.
I use my system for low level classical music only.

If you want to stay with a small footprint sub, I suggest the HRS series. I have owned a number of subwoofers and still own and use the HRS 8 with a pair of Gallo Stradas. For the size, it is impressive and reliable-. Of course you won't get down to 20Hz....

The very best musical 'sub' is from REL.
Why is so great about REL?
Rythmik looks a lot better to me for less money, too.
Rythmik stomps anything REL puts out in all facets from extension, articulate bass, and SPL. The only good thing I can say about REL subs is that they make nice furniture.
How much of a budget are you working with? Are you using it with a separate amp and preamp or a receiver?
Is this for a music only system or home theater system? How large is the room and do you have placement options? Any spousal or gf restrictions?
This is a music only system the dimensions are stated in my orig. post and no I don't have GF wife restrictions. Thanks
Actually, you only implied music system having never stating it. How big is the room you're working with and what kind of budget are you considering?
...From the original post;
The room size is 15x23 ft.

The SVS SB-1000 would go nice with your speakers. I had one with a pair of Spendor monitors and with a music only system you can't beat it. Check out the SVS site for more information.
