Is the grill cloth acoustically transparent and are you listening with it on or without it?

I can't say that I have ever found material that doesn't impact sound. It wouldn't surprise me if someone has done something in that arena, but I am oblivious to it. Because the sock is pretty much unremovable by design, I restapled it in place. I thought it might tame highs if they where hot.

Lou

Richard Vandy told me that the sock was part of the design...the speakers are too bright without it
I figired as much. With good caps they're too bright with it! I have to unstaple them again when pull the caps.

I listen to my 5A's with all Ayre electronics and just don't hear what you have reported.
I have heard the Vandy Quattro, Treo & 3A w/ all Ayre gear.
Not bright at all- I did not enjoy the Quattro nor Treo- I have read from others that the "sound" of those models reflects the 1st order cross-over.
The Vandy cross-over is very different from Thiel to my ears.
With good caps they're too bright with it! I have to unstaple them again and pull the caps. Of course that does further affirm my point about trying to compensate for a very flawed component.
Best Regards,
Lou
interesting, keep me posted Lou!
