Ok, my real problem is that I have no known speakers to compare them to, other than the wife's and that could start a civil war, so she keeps them. Anyway, I THINK I have an opamp issue, but I cannot conclusively say I do. Unless your friend is unwilling to buy used, he can get any number of great speakers. Since there are attributes of the Vandersteens that he likes, I would look at older Thiels, the ones with soft dome tweeters, particularly the early ones that used Dynaudio drivers, not that I have personal experience, but we know the design in similar, and that Jim Thiel liked clean highs, his speakers as far as I have heard were never accused of not having good highs, and all the ones I have heard did not want for detail. The one negative I have heard is that he may have glued his drivers in place, meaning crossover work would be difficult at least. That said, if he likes them, they likely will sound great for decades to come as I think by the time Thiel got into it, using electrolytics in high end was considered a no-no.
KEF 105/4's should also be a good choice. The 105.2's I'm dealing with do have a LOT of issues, but I am willing to deal with them, and I am equipped to do so. The 105/4s are a compromise. They have smaller woofers to give more accurate bass, but I guess they shorted other areas from what I have heard, but buy the time they were designed I think electrolytics were a thing of the past, unlike the 105.2s.
One thing I always do if I am unfamiliar with a certain speaker though is that I drag along my gear, and I have an 85lb amp, but I do it. If I am more familiar, then I don't care, I'm just listening for problems, not for how it will sound with my gear. Hope this helps...
Best Regards,
Lou

yes, you will need a 2nd pair of speakers for some type of comparison.
Thanks a lot. It had been my desire to make this speaker appealing to a wider swath of the public, but I think I failed miserably. I really love the time and phase alignment aspect. I hope I'll have more success with the KEFs. I am curious to hear the Vander teens with the bi-wire correction tweak you told me about. No doubt they'll sound a lot better than they initially did!
Best Regards,
Lou
Any tweaking going on this holiday weekend?
