Not quite, wasn't the woofer side loaded - not in front? I remember when I heard the Rockport Merak combo, the bass in the stage was off, I believe it was side mounted... Not a big fan of side mounted bass subs, not that I have heard a ton of them either...
I know Rockport had the Syzygyzy or something that looked like that combo above. Which did stage bass really well!

Hi !
Just to say that i completely agree
I have never heard a very good bass from a speaker with side, rear or bottom bass emission
I sincerely do not understand the rationale behind this design choice
Instead i love big woofers aiming at my belly ... the only "sane" way to place a woofer.
These speakers are unbelievable
I am sure they will sound sublime ... when i win the lottery ..
Thanks and regards.
Kind regards,
bg
Side mounted shouldn't matter with a low enough crossover. Low bass is Omni. You can't even locate it without the harmonics to guide you. I've heard systems where the subs are feet away from the main speakers and all the sound appears to come from the those main boxes. I've seen listeners standing right next to subs saying there's no sound coming from them when it's obvious there is and when you can feel the driver pumping away with your hand on it.
I disagree VERY strongly with that, not that I am some golden eared cat... (life time of performance, attendance, education, not just audiophool-dom)BUT I hear where the double basses are in the stage, when they moan the gut, and then the bass floods the stage from there... same with timpani, bass drums in symphonic works. Same for synth's and where the bass is placed in the stage by the engineers/musician/producer collective in the booth... it has a starting point as a musical note, with articulation, pitch/tone, and then hall info/sustain as that musical moment floods the stage as recorded (if live) or engineered (if multi-tracked). While it may have Omni artifacts, it is more complicated than that.
Bass instruments stage just like other instruments if recorded half way decent... Same for hall info deep bass - and how the "waves" of sonic pressure move throughout the stage/room/hall, side to side and front to back or angled when you speak of stringed instruments in a large room, even if solo piano, or bass drums of a drum kit. You do not hear just the harmonics, unless the initial attack/articulation was recorded or performed in a manner that had a subdued impact(or with intentional taste and tact - ie musicianship), and you then "feel" the sustain created by he cavity/enclosure, as well as hear it move throughout the stage... It can very well be directional (initial note and cavity/enclosure/instrument), not necessarily Omni-directional (hall/room/engineered information sustained of the after event outside the cavity/enclosure/instrument).
