the history of THX.
An off shoot of George Lucas, it was created because Star Wars was issued in Mono, Stereo, and four channel. The move played for over a year in theaters and when lucas toured the country the theaters often had the wrong soundtrack for their equipment.
THX was originally designed as a professional licensing tool so that the consumers would get the correct sound at the theater and indeed their first requirements were designed for theaters and not home use. They later came out with a small room THX requirement for smaller home use. Now they make more money off of home certification.
Originally, Mann's Chinese theaters used banks of QSC amps which were not THX certified but met all the specs. Sounded damn good to me.......

The QSC Series one despite their 5532 opamp input were surprisingly good sounding: at least the equal of the contemporary Adcom gear, and bigger QSC's tromped the bigger Adcoms in my opinion.
