All it means is the company paid to have their component reviewed.
How about this Knock Your Socks Off System? :)
Follow Ups:
For example- can a multi-channel amp deliver a minimum THX specified output for all of its channels without crapping out? Do speakers deliver a specified amount of SPL, and with the appropriate dispersion?
THX isn't a "review" (ala S'phile, If I took your meaning correctly), but a test for different components to assure that they can deliver (usually output levels to a THX "standard") at a minimum distortion level.
It doesn't mean the gear will actually SOUND any good... True though; a lot of it is utterly meaningless in the "real world" (unless you live in Hollywood and want to impress Lucasfilm/Disney)!

Back mid 90's I heard a techniques thx receiver.
Simply wretched.
And some name brand (maybe boston)thx 10" amplified sub.
sad.
I've heard phenomenal Thx setups (20k for thx dolby prologic surround by Mcintosh) that was utterly fantastic (when surround was fill).
Ideally it can mean limited vertical dispersion for speakers, and output lacking distortion.
I remember velodyne made one of their 15's thx (again 95). It didn't go as low, but went a sqeek louder. Not really audible.
