I was at a friend's place recently, and was amazed by the quality of the little 2-way 5-6 inch woofer speakers driven by a Parasound HCA something or other. We listened to FM radio and TV movie, and I'm like "this is from those little 2-ways?" All the while, there's a pair of beautiful Wilsons standing there, waiting for their moment in the spotlight.'Course, you couldn't really crank 'em up, but at "normal" levels, they sounded excellent. Dick Sequerra knows how to design a speaker, and John Curl knows how to design an amp! The audio marriage was wonderful.

I said they were designed and built by Dick Sequerra, and they're a little 2-way. I don't know the frickin' model number, if there even is one.

...Sequerra Met 7 speakers, if I recall.I bought a black pair 1982, right after they were introduced, to use with my subwoofers when I sold my Dahlquist DQ-10s.
Inexpensive, decent sound for the money but nothing to write home about.
We had just gotten married and lived in an apartment waiting for our house to be built.
The speakers have evolved since then and I have not heard them again.

I wonder, could there have been something wrong with the review sample used in that very negative review? Sam Tellig reviewed them around the same time frame and praised the heck out of them. He called them a rather mellow sounding "music lovers" speaker, if I recall correctly. They were then listed as a Stereophile "Class B" component.I've always thought that it is difficult to predict how an individual might perceive the sound of any component. Comments made here and elsewhere would certainly lend credence to that idea...

...I would trust Stereophile over Darby.
Sequerra was noted for his Metronome series. IIRC, they are up to a Met7 or 8 currently. The first Met, IMHO, sounded better than the acclaimed LS-50, maybe not as extended on the top end ( Sequerra used a paper cone tweeter), but the mids were fabulous. Most have had the foam deteriorate on the woofers (5 inch) by now, however.
I thought the originals were more engaging than the current models, but of course
YMMV
Settle down Nancy. No harm done.......

Sequerra Metronome speakers? Gad, for only $850 a pair including shipping I would imagine that they'd be one of the nicer standmounts in the $1000 price category. The Met 20 at $5000 a pair looks pretty interesting too, as does the little $400 SS-1 active desktop monitor, as does the $15,000 Sequerra Model 9 tube amp...
Wow, ALL of his stuff looks pretty damn interesting!
I had thought that Dick Sequerra had passed away but it seems that he's still living in Stamford, CT. I'd really like to hear some of his newest stuff...
And some people think the KEF LS50 is ugly?
Yes.
"Stepped driver" designs are rarely beautiful to look at. Hopefully, they sound much better than they look. Truth be told, I'd rather not stare at my speakers when listening. I don't care if a speakers is beautiful or ugly so long as they don't attract undue attention. One of the bad things about the KEF LS50s are those orange drivers with their tangerine waveguides. Those guys practically force you to stare at them...

There is no such thing as a 6 inch woofer...
Ha! You'd think.
As I wrote, you really can't crank 'em up very much.
:)
