I recently purchased a set of Acoustic Zen Adagios on the used market. While overall very happy with them the treble is slightly muted compared to my Snell EIIIs. I contacted the designer and he suggested some minor surgery on the crossover. As the RTA graphs demonstrate this decrease in treble output. This entails removing the lower driver and getting to the crossover. Anyone has any experience doing this? I'm sure I can handle the task itself but I'm seeing if there is any experience out there first. Above is a graph of the issue. The other possibility might be to figure out how to reduce the slight peaks at 40Hz, 200Hz, and 1.7kHz.Thanks in advance!
Dave

Robert Lee suggested you modify the crossover? That surprises me, though I am not questioning you. When I bought mine, I had a brief discussion with him about the crossover because someone was marketing an expensive outboard crossover designed specifically for the Adagio to hot rod them. Mr. Lee totally dismissed the after market x-over and insisted his own was carefully designed to optimize the drivers employed. Perhaps over time Mr. Lee recognized that there was some high end drop-off because in doing a search just now, I found the attached link. I can't help you with the question, but would you mind sharing Mr. Lee's suggestion?
Well, I sent him a RTA of the speakers and he thought there might be a problem with these crossovers. It almost sounded like he knew it was possible that a wrong resistor might be in there. He needs a picture to be sure which I'm going to try to get today. I'm overall very happy with the rich sound and the tight tuneful bass but compared to my Snell E-IIs they seem a little rolled off to me. My audiophile friers say they don't notice it but the graph bears out my impressions. I have to say Mr Lee was more than helpful when contacted especially considering these are second hand speakers. I may see about those waveguides in that article. I'll share further details as I get them.
What was your experience? I'm curious as it seems you might have had similar impressions.

I am driving mine with an Audio Research VS110 amp and a tube preamp (AudioPrism Mantissa) . My room is on the small side and I have a fair amount of room treatment. That said they dont sound rolled off but as most reviewers have noted, the tweeter is solid but not stelllar. I have had mine for five years and they are allowing me to enjoy listening without the urge for something new. Buy outriggers and I recommend AZ's own speaker cable. Using a laser to measure exact distance from tweeter to head and lots of patience finding optimum speaker position/ toe-in pays huge dividends. Cabinets need to be vertical too so check with a level.
