I've heard all the speakers mentioned here, and for my hard earned $1,500.00, (Actually $1,400.00) the Golden Ear Triton 7s offered the best sound, at least in my home system. YMMV. The Tritons sound was extremely well integrated, with bass response way beyond the others mentioned here. Sandy Gross knows speaker design, and it clearly shows in the 7s.

Yes, all but the GE Triton 7s are bass-shy. I use a REL subwoofer to boost the low end of my Nola Boxers.

another vote for the triton 7 here. it was the coherence that sold me on them. incredible for the price. the bass is satisfying and tight, never tubby. in the miracle for the money sweepstakes, they are right up there. i preferred these to the powered sub versions btw.

I think I will go with the Goldenear Triton 3's. Just a step up from the 7's and I won't need stands. Thanks for all the helpful advice.

I auditioned the Tritions here in Bangkok at an excellent show room. They were fantastic!! So naturally I had to buy a pair!
They also had the KEF's, but the staff said the quality was not so good and they had too many returns from clients.
This was an upscale place and my audition was with Macintosh electronics in a professional sound room with music of my choice.
Many thanks to those of you who recommended I look into the Golden Ear products, that appears to be sage advice!!
