I'm in the process of getting all the parts for my 5.1 home theatre. I have polk audio front speakers, centre speaker and yamaha receiver in a 3.0 setup right now. My question should I add the subwoofer or surround speakers next I only have enough for one item right now?

if your fronts can play cleanly down to 40Hz. If so, I would go for the surrounds first and save money for a good sub. If your looking for sub recommendations, I offer Rythmik LV12-R, a ported sub in a fairly large box using a 12" driver and servo feedback. Its vvery articulate.

if you know that your system is going 5.1, then, get your surround speakers. I strongly suggest that looking into REL subwoofer(s) when the times comes. These are the best on the market. Happy Listening!
Sub all the way. You will get more enjoyment from that than from surrounds.
It'll add a lot more impact to the sound. Then when you can afford 'em, get some good, matching speakers for the rear channels...

If you get the surrounds, you'll still miss any impact from your theater. A sub will get you farther (enjoyment-wise) until you have the budget for surrounds. My HT has three subs (LFE, ctr and R/L). I traded the R/F sub for some tower speakers and immediately missed it. I moved my 2- channel sub into its place and bought stereo subs for the music system. For me, they make that much difference.

I second getting a subwoofer. I have two subwoofers, even though I'm not a bass freak. I recently bought surround sound speakers. The second subwoofer was more important to me than the first set of surrounds speakers.
Just my $0.02 worth.
I was looking at a Yamaha YST-FSW150 as it pairs to my receiver with the ypao mic but are they any good outside of the easy setup with the ypao?
I am not sure what you mean by it pairs with your receiver. If you want more slam for your money check out the BIC America F12 for under $200. The challenge with the Yamaha is that it's a small driver <7" in a small cabinet.
There are other Yamaha subwoofers as well that might give you more for your money. Are you size limited in your selection?
Sorry, I can't help there. I've zero experience with them.

Is you receiver 5.1? Personally, I would get surround speakers.
5.1 Yamaha RX-V375
