I've had an extended listen to these, like months. I don't get the reviews. Makes you think some guys are paid to give good remarks. These speakers are dark and would not open up. I would say these are one of the worse speakers Revel makes. I've heard the entire performance series and by far the F208's are the best. And as crazy as this sounds....the M105 are more open than the M106's which are just terrible!
I've also had a listen to the Revel Studio2 as well as the Salon2 reference speakers. With that tweeter...they are absolutely fabulous!
Follow Ups:
for the characteristics of the type of sound we listen to from speakers. You can't please everybody.
If the Revels are "rotten", then they will failed where it is nearly impossible to do so. I have never heard a small monitor that didn't produce good sound to my ears and brain. The sonic differences between the dozen or so I have heard were much smaller than for the floor-standing 3-way speakers I have heard. And that includes a very well used vintage Dynaco mini-mini that probably cost $25 new and quite a few LS3/5A types, along with assorted Epos and even the new, highly touted KEF mini, plus some older Yamahas and a few low-priced American brands I heard before I got deep into the hobby and have long since forgotten the manufacturers' names.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
after John Atkinson gave them a rave review. I was underwhelmed. More recently, I heard the Studio2 or Salon2 - don't recall which - at RMAF. I was again underwhelmed. I suppose it could be the electronics/room, but I've yet to hear what the fuss is regarding Revel speakers.
Also, it's disappointing that they've off-shored production.
I've heard the Salons as well as the Studio in the home.....so that maybe why they sounded great. I had the M106 in my home for like 6 months.
I can tell you why. The Revel F52's that I have now and owned longer than any other speaker beat out:
Magnepan MG3.6 with my stands
B&W matrix 801 III with sound anchor stands
Spendor SP1/2e
Audio Physics Virgo III
Von Scwechert VR4jr
Harbeth HL5
I listen to 80% classic rock or 20% blues on vinyl with PASS or Manley electronics.
My next speaker will probably be the Revel Salon II
Revels are well-reviewed speakers. I'm not claiming they're bad, merely that my auditions have fallen short of expectations. Note that my RMAF audition was in the Revel/Levinson room, set up by Voecks himself. Presumably, that system was dialed in . . .
