I recently have acquired Tannoy speakers and need information on them. Specifically when they were made and what receiver I should look into purchasing to get these speakers to sound as intended. Before we do this, here is what I know so far.
They are Tannoy's with a tag on the back that says Mallorcan Serial # N 1511 as well as a number that is 062 822. There is also an inspection stamp that has 25/HF/12/8. Inside, there are speakers that have the following on the end label. "Monitor Gold Dual Concentric Loudspeaker Type LSU/HF/12/8."
When I looked up the serial number I found the following site http://www.docstoc.com/docs/80213297/SerialNumbers
But the serial number for this was not present.
Now I need help from this knowledgeable community in answering these questions.
1. What is the age of these speakers.
2. What is the worth? (to convince my fiancé to hold onto them)
3. What receiver should I look to purchase to use these speakers to their full potential.
4. Any other useful information would be very helpful.
Thank you for any and all input!
Follow Ups:
Monitor Golds came in 2 Varieties;
Early production Golds had the folded accordian edge surrounds of the earlier Dual Concentrics. Likely to use up existing Cone stockpiles.
Later Gold (real ones IMO) versions were fitted with Butyl rubber surrounds. THE more desirable version, as the next version HPDs, made sold under Harmon International Corp decree were fitted with Ewwww. biodegradable Foam surrounds.. Not an improvement, by any yardstick
TS parameters are significantly differing from either the early surround Golds And the later HPDs.
These rubber edged 12's have/had a midrange that was /is arguably THE High water mark of Tannoy sounds.
Also note that, now at 40 years of age, the crossovers need a refurbish.. badly.
But Collector Weenies balk at 'opened' Crossover boxes.. silly boys!
Relaise that the M cabinets are essentially worthless. Mediocre designs poorly made out of flimsy materials. Only collector types would value those, beyond kindling
Best to point out that Tannoy was primarily a Driver Maker..
Woodwork manufacture was only an attempt to sell more Drivers in to the Consumer market
Price?? Wellll.. I paid $147 each for mine... in 1972.
No sympathy/respect for those who seek only profit.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding this post, but by no means are the butyl-rubber-surround Golds considered to be more desirable or more real, by the majority of Tannoy enthusiasts.
The majority prefer the accordion-edge surrounds of the Original gold design, which wasn't a "use-up-the-existing"-anything design, by any means. The Monitor Gold was a much-heralded upgrade, of an iconic UK loudspeaker brand, a major design standard that stood for years and years until the (rubber) cheaper version of surrounds started to get used.
The treated accordion paper surrounds last for decades and continue, whereas the rubber surrounds rot and deteriorate to dust with age. Thus the accordion surrounds are stock tannoy implementation, quality as sanctioned by tannoy, whereas there is no knowing with the rubber ones, which can be anything from re-mount/re-cone 'kits' sold by tannoy dealers to aftermarket generic fixes.
The accordion/ treated-paper is considered the Gold standard.
Neil Young mentioned in a recent interview with TAS that he uses them in his studio along with Altec VOTT's:
TAS: What kind of stereo do you have at home?
NY: I have a lot of McIntosh equipment that I use for listening. My studio is full of different stuff, Tannoy and an old pair of Altec [Lansing] speakers with Mac 275s running them. It’s the old Voice of the Theater speakers. They’re ridiculous [laughs]. Also some reel-to-reel gear.
Mallorcans were introduced in '69 and the drivers were discontinued in '74.
Well, if the very quick search I did means anything, you may have a very nice pair of speakers there. The Mallorcans are 4 figure speakers if they are in good shape and there are a lot of avid collectors out there.
Hold on to your 1,2 or maybe 3 thousand dollar speakers. If she doesn't want them, I'll go pick them up. I could use a new VPI scout.
Very nice speakers indeed! You asked about a receiver to drive them...
Good strong output transformers are important, rarely found in receivers.
Do you have a price range in mind? Do you need a receiver or would an
integrated amp suffice?
I was hoping to get a receiver for $150-$250 that could run them properly without clipping. I was thinking of something like a Yahamha CA 1000, but am open to any ideas. If there was a way to connect the integrated amp into my tv that could work too.
