I've been going through my the audio collection of my brother who died tragically earlier this year, and one thing he had was a pair of 1970s ESS Heil air motion transformer tweeters. He worked for a speaker repair company at one point, so he had accumulated various odds and ends. These are the ones with round black mounting flanges. They may be Model 5 tweeters, or was that the name of the speaker they were used in?Long ago, as an experiment, he stuck them in a pair of generic speaker boxes, but it's an experiment that obviously didn't work out, so they were just put away.
I have done some speaker building and modification, and I was wondering how these might best be used. I don't know that much about their power handling. If one were to be damaged, are they at all repairable, or would that pretty much be the end of them?
I haven't contacted the current incarnation of ESS. Don't know if they'd have specs or other documentation.

3.5Khz 18dB/oct minimum crossover, use a 211-2 lightbulb in series for protection.
Thanks for the help guys!
These are not the dipole AMTs, by the way. I have a feeling that these are a type that hasn't been made since the 1970s. As such, I don't know if they'd be repairable, and I don't know that I'd want to put a lot of design/build time into something that depends on a driver that can't be fixed or replaced. I will continue investigating
If they're the "Great Heil AMT" they are very efficient and they sound really good.
I have a pair that I removed from a pair of "monitor" ESS speakers that I bought at a garage sale.
I mate mine with JBL 2118 midrange speakers playing from 200Hz to the 2500Hz crossover point with the Heils. (simple 6db per octave passive crossover)
The lows are handled by a pair of 15" JBL 2231a.
The JBL 2118 is rated at 97db. Some people say they are more like 95.5db.
I have the Heil AMT padded down by almost 6db to get, what I hear as, a proper balance.

BTW You can buy the Heil AMTs new for $700 a pair. Also replacement diaphragms for $80 each and you don't have to take anything apart.
Remove the stickers, top and bottom, and the thing just slides out.

P.S. The Morel MDT33 tweeter is not hooked up.
P.P.S. I looked up the model 5 tweeter and it's much different than the Great Heil AMT I am talking about.

I know someone who may be able to help you.
Contact Ed Schilling of the Horn Shoppe. His main claim to fame is single driver Horn speakers. But the last few years he's offered the option of a two-way, with his Horn matched up with a Heil AMT.
He can tell you how to take them apart, replace the diaphragms (if necessary), figure out crossover points, etc.
There is a lot of information in the High Efficiency Asylum. At least one person did a build a few years back, and detailed the build. They are very efficient and were padded down for the commercial offerings to match less efficient woofers.
Probably the most interesting thing I saw on the Firstwatt page (see link below). These are plans for a low frequency HEIL using six 8" woofers per side.
