The tweeters are worth replacing because you can buy replacements cheap on Ebay and the A100s are a dam nice two way.It sounds as tho you may be clipping and that would mean the amp is running out of power at certain frequencies on peaks.I have also seen preamps cause this issue on occasion but that's easy enough to check.
Turn down the volume slightly where you hear the rattling sound and see if it still rattles. If it goes away, you need new tubes. If it is still there,it is probably a tweeter issue.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

Thank you Michael,
I'm think you are right about the clipping...I do need to turn it up to hear it.
I hear a lot of good things about these A100's... It may be best to keep them in service. It will save me the $400.00 pr. I would spend on the 5 1/4" Definitive Technology Book Shelf speakers.

Normality frightens me- its what they use to lure you into the cookie cutter.

Both channels, one channel, different sound levels between channels?

As used in early Boston models.
Use data sheet to select a replacement driver (if needed).
Boston may still offer a re-build on these, its been a while since I was a Boston service center.
email madisound with that spec sheet. They will get your a near a replacement as possible.
