I have been searching for a long time for a pair of used Harbeth Monitor 30. I have recently located a pair overseas (outside of the USA). They will be shipped in their original cartons. Do you think it's safe to ship this speaker without a crate in their standard shipping boxes? Also, I really, really hate to send my money out of the country and would prefer to buy from a reputable US seller. If you have a pair of M30s or know of someone who does, please do speak up asap!!

Enjoy....I woudn't
Several years ago I bought the Harbeth Compact II's from a retailer in the UK named Signals. There was zero problem in shipping from the UK to the USA.
Later I purchased a pair of Tannoy Turnberry HE's from the Netherlands. Again there were zero problems with the shipment.
Good luck.

There was no US distributor in the late 90's, I had bought the last two pair of P3's from the old distributor, and I talked Alastair into shipping me a pair of C7's. It worked out. They arrived, I liked them, and he started selling them into the overseas market, and continued until the new distributor set up a dealer network. So shipping one pair in two boxes is not a problem at all, from my perspective.
I would pass on them and wait for another pair to come up in this country. As a matter of fact there was a pair of compact 7's for sale on another site that I was interested in and was located in Europe the guy wanted $550 to ship them so I passed on them. Take your time and a pair will come your way.
Here's the problem. You get the speakers and 6 months down the road you blow a driver. Well, guess what. You are shit out of luck. The distributor from Harbeth will not sell you a new driver because it wasn't purchased through an authorized dealer in the states. Then you are stuck with a speaker that doesn't work. Now If Harbeth used an off the shelf driver that would not really matter. But since their drivers are proprietary you are stuck. So even if you save 2 or 3k on the front end. You could lose that same 2 or 3k on the backend.
Yeah, but Harbeths last forever. Thanks, though. Interesting point. A friend of mine had a pair and one of the Radial drivers cracked. She had no problem getting a replacement from WS at the distributor in the US and her M30s had been purchased used.
"Outside the USA" may come as a shock to you, but there is a mighty big world around the centre of the Earth.
Which country are you talking about?
Your sarcasm seems to indicate the assumption of ignorance, arrogance, or prejudice on my part. That's the trouble with assumptions. As you said, it's a mighty big world.
I have zero problem with other countries. Obviously the speakers originated in the UK. My issue is that I am in the USA and I'm worried about shipping them overseas in boxes rather than on a bulk pallet.
The difference in price would have to be substantial to justify the cost of shipping and the risk associated with such a journey. Work and cost to get them through customs is another issue. The brokerage fees alone will probably make this endeavour a bad choice.
To each his own but I heard the larger Harbeth 40.1s briefly and, admittedly, with music I disliked at the Montreal show and can't understand what the fuss is all about. Only the big Tannoys sounded worse to my ears.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be.
De gustibus non est disputandum.
For my increasingly meager Shekels, Harbeth's P3ESR--within its limitations--is a gem; while at the same time, both the 40 and the 40.1 seemed to me to be exercises in big-assed 1970s studio-sound nostalgia.
As I wrote in Stereophile at the time, I cranked up the 40s on Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" title track so loud that they probably heard it in Connecticut, and it was great, but, it was a trip in Mr. Peabody's WABAC Machine--pure nostalgia for a time that perhaps never was.
I don't have the time and nobody is paying me to explain the square/cube "size effect" law one more time, but, I think it explains your sense of Nothingburgerness, which, although I don't agree with, I understand and respect.
And, if you heard the same laughable setup I did, that goes double. Or more than double.
Speakers on chairs?

Oh that was you? I was wondering where that music was coming from, now that explains it!
Yup.

How much are you saving by buying preowned? In my opinion anyone buying such a fine speaker as this Harbeth should buy a new one from a US dealer or if preowned from a US seller. Why take a chance? How much do you save? Couple of steak dinners with fine wine? Forget it.
Sincerely
Bill
Harbeths hold up for a long time and are safe second hand buys. Couple of steak dinners? The new Harbeth 30.1 sells for $6k. The most I recall seeing a used 30 selling for was $3k.
Two different worlds, we live in two different worlds...
Steak dinners are VERY expensive there!

You could ask the north American dealers if they have any trade ins. This may not step on their agreements to only sell in their local regions. (though I don't know).
Soundhounds in Victoria BC has a pretty big used section and they carry Harbeth - maybe they have a second hand pair - their prices are often quite a bit better than some on certain models.

Still you could e-mail some of the dealers closer to you as well.
Probably safe i say because they are shipped from England in the first place. I bought my original Compact 7's from a UK dealer when there was no US distributor.
I have a pair of M30's, hardly ever used. Not sure if I have cartons because I boight them used a few years ago from a local seller. Where are you located? You can email me through the asylum.
