The goal was copy protection. The ease of use was more of a side effect.

In addition to convenience:
1. Better quality audio than can be carried by S/PDIF in that it can accommodate higher resolution formats and multichannel.
2. Video quality better than analog since it avoids the digital-to-analog-to-digital conversions necessary with higher resolution and 3D.
Of course, none of this is relevant unless the connected equipment is current.
HDMI launched in 2003 and since then lots of folks with "current" equipment have experienced nothing but trouble.
Now, if it came to market with the stipulation "may not work as intended for ten or more years", that would have been different.
HDMI was created to protect the film industry. Any performance advantages were/are secondary.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
HDMI circuitry is very susceptible to electrical surges. I had a nearby lightning strike make all four HDMI inputs on my Samsung 53" LED display inoperative. The display reads "No signal" on each of these inputs. I later researched this and found it to be a common problem requiring a board replacement costing hundreds of dollars. Currently, I am using the component inputs as an alternative to replacing the set.
