But I expect my system to at least cover all the naturally produced notes of orchestral instuments. The contrabasson, harp, and piano frequencies naturally dip down below that of a bass guitar. The low E on a standard bass guitar is about 41Hz.
My speakers support down to 40Hz and I augment them with a sub for full coverage and general bass foundation. I am not looking to shake windows, just experience the full range comfortably.
If a speaker only supports down to 56Hz, I would expect you should factor in another $1k or more for a decent subwoofer for support. I'm not knocking these speakers. Martin Logan CLXs (at $25,495/pair) also have 56Hz exactly as their low point. They NEVER demo them however without two pretty expensive subwoofers in tow. You need to look at what adding a sub or two does to your full cost. I contend your $3k price is the starting cost. If these speakers (with sub support) still compete with other options in $4k - $5k range, now you're talking.

Actually, I thought the bass was okay, at least in the shop's listening room. I've heard subs before, and they always seem to be somewhat removed, orphaned from the main speakers. Seamless integration, I guess, requires 2 subs, and I'm just not willing to pay for that.
I have seamless integration and I have only one subwoofer. I actually have two, but when I had them separated they did not integrate and the bass seemed muddy. I decided to locate them right next to each other (actually one on top of the other) and they integrate beautifully. You can see them against the wall next to the window in the picture below.

Thanks for the pics. Well, I guess that integration can be done. In any event, I won't be spending a dime for a sub. My a/d/s 1230s have plenty of tight bass, probably more than the CM 9s if the specs mean anything.
