so bought a pair of W70's off craigslist and although i really like them, they seem to have less than snappy highs and then also some muddiness in the low mid tones. not sure if this is the speaker's characteristic sound (i'm sure part of it may be) but because i've read so much praise about these speakers, i think they should be a little better.
so do i need to recap? what are the signs that a cap is going bad? i know these have no cap for the woofers but i haven't had the backs off yet so not sure what's in there.
also, i've read that oil caps are the way to go. does anyone have a complete list of parts needed? will all the old caps be marked so i will know exactly what to get?
the speakers aren't pretty but the drivers are all in what appear to be perfect shape despite the fact that the front cloth is long gone.
hmm, listening now to serge gainsbourg's reggae album and this really sounds great although there is still the slight low muddiness.
oh, and driving them with a NAD 7240 receiver (40 watts.)
thathanks for any help....
and the pics:
the pretty one
the evil twin
and the infamous super 3 tweeter, which i kinda expect more from....

Follow Ups:
It seems strange to me that the hole for the upper large speaker on the left is a different size on the two enclosures. Are these not a matched pair? How about serial numbers ― are they consecutive or vastly different?
Sorry, I can't help you on the recapping issue.
Good luck,
John Elison
it looks like someone tried to open up the hole on the one speaker by cutting it larger to fit the driver. not sure why the original opening is somewhat smaller than the driver---is there an acoustic reason for this?
and no serial numbers anywhere on them. i saw some pics of W60's from the same time period (61-62) and they had paper labels with the serial numbers stapled to the back near the connectors but mine are long gone. the back panels of mine have no markings, labels, tags or any writing at all of any kind.
the only markings other the one "wharfedale 70" tag on the speaker with some cloth still left are the "12/61" on each tweeter, hand written on the cone in a yellow pencil. not sure if that is a date or what exactly????

The driver in question is slot loaded - firing through an opening on the baffle board that is smaller than itself. Slot loading is a strategy for increasing a driver's dispersion. Harold Beveridge fired his electrostatic transducer through a long vertical slot for this purpose. The slot of the JBL 007 is part of the driver itself rather than a feature of the enclosure.
