There is no flat - you need the amplifier that's inside the box to drive the monitor. If you set the volume control so the amp puts out exactly the same signal level as its input, you're not going to hear anything (or maybe, if you hold your ear real close, the barest hint of a whisper.)

Should I run them like McIntosh amplifiers, and just open them up all the way (-10), all of the time, and control the volume with the pre-amp?

It doesn't matter - you've got two pots in circuit, and either one can be used. Use the one you can reach easiest.
