In Reply to: RE: A of Dunlavy SC-IV for sale but not SC-IV/A posted by Rocky on May 14, 2012 at 22:05:14
I have the Signatures. When JA tested them, they measured as well or better than any speaker. The A's are brighter than the Signatures, but some rugs can cure that.

Old School,
Dude, no one is saying your IVs are not accurate or measure any worse than others speakers...hell they even made product of the year in Stereophile one year(that literally almost put John out of business - as he couldn't keep up with demand fast enough - his words not mine)...but moving up the Dunlavy ladder there are noticeable differences.
I even once ran into a guy that swore his Dunlavy IIs w/ a quality sub were the purist reproduction of music he had ever heard.
Conclusion - John made some great speakers, all of them for that matter!
Just trying to help the OP's question: I think the SCIV superior to the SCIVa. I suspect the vastly bigger, vastly more expensive, SCV and SCVI superior to the SCIV. If you think every new incarnation of a product is superior to the older one, you are a fool. Just another reason why I favor blind tests.
Old School -Sound is subjective, that was the point of my posts.
The IVA was made with upgraded parts, does it sound better(?), does it sound different, yes, do they command a higher resale value, yes! Stereophile did reviews on both, I suggest the OP try to read both if he cannot have a "blind test" auditioning both side by side.
Re; "If you think every new incarnation of a product is superior to the older one, you are a fool." - Nope I don't, but in John Dunlavy's case I would suspect knowing the guy like I did, he did believe it was.

My IVs Signatures are for sale here. Stereophile has reviews of both. As usual, you must have a good system to hear what difference(s) exist. I recall that the tweeters woofers and therefore the crossover was changed but the woofer made what difference was perceptible. There is very little difference in the speakers because the design is the same and they differ only in (essentially trivial) detail that made a very small difference.
Yes, this is my point: there is very little difference between the SCIV and the SCIVa I prefer the SCIV OVER the supposedly improved SCIVa, but the difference is extremely small.
