Now that you accidentally wondered in...
...got a computer sitting around? ;)
It's not as hard as some here make it out to be.
Then again, the guys in the cable asylum make speaker cables sound hard...
It's an ASYLUM after all...
How about accessing your CD collection and never touching a CD jewel case again? How about never having to organize or alphabetize your collection again? How about being able to make comprehensive play lists for long listening sessions and change them on the fly?
It's like have an automated 10,000 disk changer... without any phyiscal media or a changer mechanism to break...
Sound like fun? It is...
Lure Affixed. Line cast. Waiting... Waiting...
Cheers,
Presto
Follow Ups:
Each LP, each cassette, each R2r, each long tape (taped from FM, say opera or concerts).
Please justify this against other ways of spending said time.
The ONLY benefit I can see is one set of digital media, and one 'upgradeable player' needed. Against that a second constantly updated copy - on a separate - very reliable - hard disk with VERY good virus protection.
LBNL name one good classical database software package.

Well, it's more complicated if you have a lot of analogue stuff. If you have a very high quality A/D converter, then you can run a PC Audio Server in realtime - it's not any more or less valid than digitizing analog and saving it to a file. Others may disagree.
As far as the time commitment goes, I know 'philes who record the first play of every album they own, one used to use cassette and the other reel-to-reel. Backing up, even analog, is not a new phenomenon. FOr CD's, it's easy. You have a machine sitting beside you and you can extract while you listen to music. Between tracks, you glance over and if the tray is open you put in the next disk, close the tray, get the file data from the internet and repeat. Sitting down and just "doing it" would be very tenuous on a large CD collection, but if you are listening to music while you are doing it, it's not really "wasted time".
The benefit? Well, once you get used to being able to create playlists and not having to get out of your chair every time you want to change disks, you're sort of spoiled that way. My listening sessions now are wall to wall music, and not squinting to see small text on the sides of jewel cases. At the end, my listening room is as tidy as when I walked in - spotless and minimalistic, the way I like it.
Benefits:
- listening sessions are more enjoyable
- No groove wear, no "CD dry rot", no tape wear
- searching is faster
- changing discs is as easy as changing tracks
- no get up sit down get up sit down...
- backup: music on two drives = good security (easy)
- Fire? grab your drive on the way out of the house
- DSP. Some digital processes are not possible in analog domain
In any case, it's more of a no-brainer for those with CD collections.
Digitizing analog is another matter. Some would never do it, no matter what the purported benefits, and I get that. If the whole point is having the material in analog in the first place, then it's a non-argument.

Also track swapping wouldn't be a big selling point for me.
Name a really good ADC?

Presto,
I already have a PC based system up and running. I have been on Foobar 0.83 for some years. Yes it's an older version, but works well for me. It does all that I need for a front end. I also use Media portal for all the ripped DVD's we own and like the convenience of fingertip access for everything. I am just a 2 channel guy with a champagne taste.
Home built QX 9650 PC / WinXP.
Jkenny modded M2tech
Tri Vista 21 DAC
Genesis 2 4 column speakers with 1600watt servo amp. (Bass columns)
2 Bryston 7BST amps or 2 Levinson 33h amps for the High/Mid panels
BP26 Pre Amp
DIY cables and interconnects.
Other assorted equipment.

...I am preaching to the converted! ;)
I use Foobar too. 0.9.6.9 for the Otachan FIR filter crossover and 1.1.5 with the latest VST host plugin for the Allocator IIR crossover.
When I don't need digital crossovers I can use any player, but I still use Foobar.
Cheers,
Presto
