I was listening to a CD "under the skin" by Lindsey buckingham, and I can hear that the mic is being overdriven when he sings loud.
There is another CD where I can tell that the producer didnt do a good job mastering. You could tell that tiesto compressed the track to death.
Follow Ups:
By definition, an "ideal" loudspeaker has razor flat impedance curve and frequency response with perfect polar response. It will behave in accordance to the input waveform with no lag, over-shoot or distortion of any kind, and have a constant group delay and thus add no phase distortion.
If someone heard this "ideal" speaker and called it too revealing, I'd say we need better quality recordings and/or playback gear (usually better recordings) if this ideal speaker made unpleasant music.
In my mind, an "excessively revealing" speaker does not exist. I also believe that the cure for what SEEMS to be an "excessive revealing speaker" is absolutely NOT a "less revealing speaker".
Most speakers these days have pretty good detail retrieval capabilities, unless you're dealing with some very sub-par drivers. FOr me, the best improvements come from better sources, which have better focus on what we philes call "micro-detail". BUT, our beloved microdetail is a double edged sword. Nice micro-details and nice, and bad micro-details are bad.
And you can't have one without the other!! That's the catch-22 of "revealing".
Cheers,
Presto
Try KEXP in Seattle, on the web. Select 1411 kbps playback in the left-hand window and you'll experience the only (that I know of) uncompressed radio station in the world. If anyone knows of any others, please inform. This station specializes in alternative music, so you better be open to the indie stuff.
Freedom is the right to discipline yourself.
You should here flaws in the recording, if they are there. Unfortunately they are frequently there. I've heard all sort of things from clipping to moved mics to splice joints to screwed up polarity.
Pop music seems to be the worst, but by no means does it have a monopoly on recording screw ups.

Producers want hot and loud recordings and don't give a rip about dynamics - after all we audio enthusiasts are only 0.1% of the market.
Three most important things in Audio reproduction: Keep the noise levels low, the power high and the room diffuse.
In most cases, (especially in the past), the producer doesn't have a say in it. It's long out of their hands and in control of the record company after the final mixes are finished.
The "band" and producer are long gone by the time all of the compression gets added by the middle man, (tools like Steve Hoffman), mastering: then the second mastering as the physical discs are cut at the duplication facility.Still, that being said, the modern Producer is often paid by the Record label, and works for the label. The studio Engineer(s), also work for the producer, - and does what they are told.
Two of the biggest misconceptions about (successful) pop acts:
1. The songwriter/musicians are rich.
2. That the producer/engineer is responsible for the final sound of the finished product.

Songwriters can be very rich, in fact they make more money from music than anybody else.
Basically the gross profits from sales (minus only production, packaging and distribution) are split two ways: 50% go to the writer and 50% to the artist.
Out of his 50% the artist has to pay back the record company advance, studio hire, the producer, musicians, the mix engineer, any promotion and his manager. All this is taken first and the artist gets whats left.
The songwriter pays nothing.
A lot a more money going out than coming in......
You should see my bodyguard invoices. :-)
But really, - sure, - a few smart people get their due.
However, - as you said, - "a songwriter can get rich"
That is very true, some are.

That's another beauty of being a successful songwriter: Bodyguards are not necessarily needed.
There are some really obscure yet hugely successful ones.
Like the ex-guitarist of '70s glam rock band Mud. Amongst other things he wrote 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' for Kylie Minogue. He lives quietly in a cottage in the Malverns.
Michael Bolton was a millionaire before he released his first record singing etc
I even once seen an interview with a gothy looking couple who churn out trashy chart fodder tunes by the bucket-load.
I usually listen to electronica and I notice that a lot of the better producers such as kaskade, armin van buuren and DJ tiesto (except a for a ouple of tracks) dont brickwall everything.
Kaskade and Late night Alumni's (same people involved with each)(kaskade is a member of late night alumni) are always full and vidbrant and full spectrum sounding, Especially seince deep/progressive house music demands it.
The worst sounding album compression wise is still death magnetic which is why i didnt buy it and never will, there are a couple that come close to being just as bad. the killers hot fuss is pretty much red all the way through.
But, Junkie XL, Sasha & Digweed, Stephane Pompaugnac, Amon Tobin, Chemical Brothers, etc... have varying degrees of quality. It's interesting. Some, like Orbital, are not so bad. Sometimes it depends on how far an artist goes...
I notice that a lot of the Air CDs are pretty good. Some of the Kruder & Dorfmeister stuff is pretty OK too....

Ooh, I like Kruder&Dorfmeister.Good DJs too, I have seen them together one New Years Eve in Berlin and singly later on.
Nice guys.
PS: Remaining on the teutonic path Burnt Friedmann is good too.

I have a double CD by K&D and I digs it!
Get Air, and the other K&D CDs. There was talk about a reunion, - but, - we're all waiting; and waiting...
Try also Euphoria, Blunted, and the Six Degrees Compilation: "Recline"

You might also like stuff by Groove Corporation, Burnt Friedman, Kid Loco, Jazzanova, Thievery Corporation, Fila Brazillia, Rockers HiFi, Noiseshaper to name but a few.
High quality reproduction?
They make ipods for that kind of music...don't blame the speakers:O) Mainstream Pop music has been in a wasteland for a while now, both musicaly and in terms of production value. Alternative music and production values have been pretty good however...you just have to know where to find it. We have WXPN in our area, but often times it's the University radio stations that also play some great music that happens to be minimaly produced aka sounds fantastic! I enjoy my vast collection of classical, 20th century and jazz SACD/CD's.

The whole album is clipped. Listen how the beat 'one' )of 4 to a measure) bass drum lick on tk 2 'blurrs everything else' when it hits.
Somebodys idea of cute.
The speakers are probably not TOO revealing. They are probably revealing the shortcomings of the recording. Expand your taste in music and you will less likely come into contact with that.
Good God. THIS..is what is wrong with audio-nervosa...
He likes what he likes.
Get a grip.
