I'm certain the Harbeth is better. :-)

than the Dynaudio C-1 when we compared them driven by Ayre Reference system such as the KXR, MXR, C-5xe, P-5xe and Ayre DPS Turntable. However, I was just at my friend's house yesterday listening to Focal JM Labs Alto Utopia BE speakers driven by Krell EVO 402, EVO 202 preamp and Wadia 581se. As good as the Harbeth/Dynaudio C-1 and Ayre system combo the Focal JM Labs Alto Utopia BE Krell/Wadia combo was much better in every aspect of reproduction of the recorded music.
Of course YMMV.

I wonder how well the M30's would hold up against them.

Coincidentally, I heard the Harbeth Super HL 5's in my system today which usually has Dynaudio Contour S3.4's. The Harbeth's bettered the Dynaudio's in musicality, tonality and bass depth - the bass was slightly tubby and overripe but you could hear the different bass textures of a plucked double bass which you cannot with Dynaudio's faster and tighter bass presentation. The Dynaudio was more natural with voices vs. the Harbeth having a fuller and warmer presentation. Unsurprisingly, the Harbeth bettered the Dyn's at jazz (the interplay between the musicians in a quartet was presented superbly) but lost out in pop and rock - Dire Straits did not have the toe tapping factor. The Harbeths surprisingly sounded better than the Dyn's on acid jazz/ hip hop - US3's 'Hand On The Torch' was that much more involving again with great bass depth - if not the impact and slam. Surprisingly too, the Dyn's bettered the Harbeths in a Keith Jarrett standards trio disc - the piano notes on the latter were on the fat side. Unsurprisingly, guitars sounded better on the Dyn's retaining the steely snap and air which again sounded thicker on the Harbeth's.
Now, what's a speaker with the respective sonic virtues of the Dyn's and the Harbeth's outlined above?
The 40.1's are 5000.00 more a pair then the Dynaudios. A fair comparison would be to compare the Harbeths to the Sapphires. That would be an Interesting comparison.
with the same Ayre reference equipment. The Sapphire was much better than the Harbeth and the C-4 was much better than the Sapphire.BTW, all these auditions were done through the dealership of which I've known the owner for over 20 years. He's the dealer for Parasound, Bryston, Ayre, Brinkmann, Dynaudio, Harbeth, Aesthetix, to named but a few.
I'm quite lucky in a way that I have an excellent relationship with all of our local high end dealerships. Although, I haven't bought anything from them for a long time this didn't stop them from letting me know if they have new equipment come in.
