My preamp does have a sub woofer out and one can do bass management on it.
Just trying to figure out how I match the volume and set the crossover frequency.

don't discount the fact that two subs are better than one, three better than two. IMO, this area is one of the few times in audio the more is better rule applies. You can even mix brands and capabilities. Recently I built a sub for a business acquaintance, and we went with his old good looking yamaha 10 inch sub front and center and my larger dual 15 sub at the rear. much better than the my sub alone - we were able to get rid of a 10dB 40hz room node almost completely that was present with either subwoofer alone
Three most important things in Audio reproduction: Keep the noise levels low, the power high and the room diffuse.
I do mine by ear. I have a cd with track 20-75 or so at 1 hz increments. I just increment it up and adjust the subs until I like the sound. I measure stuff too-but I always end up tweaking it until I like it.
If the amp does bass management, you need to set the controls on the sub to bypass any processing/crossover and begin with the level setting at mid-point. Where you set the crossover and level on the amp will depend on your other speakers. Generally, one should set the crossover at about 1 octave above the -3db point for the main speakers but, hopefully, no higher than 80Hz.
Ideally, you should have a way to measure the sound output. At the minimum, a SLM with some RTA software on your PC. There is, I believe, an RTA app for the iPhone but decent measurement equipment is worth the investment. Take a look at RoomEQ Wizard, TrueRTA, XTZ Room Analyzer, etc.

I'll use this as a starting point.
