That tweeter was problematic, even when new. Usually the lead-out wire just fractures and you get no sound. Yours may be rubbing and have reduced output. This tweeter commonly rubbed when new. There are some good aftermarket diaphragm kits on eBay, I don't think JBL makes them available anymore. With searching you may be able to find some new old stock (at a price). This guy wants $140.

Some Kiwi black shoe dye will make it black, two coats.

Thanks for the help. I saw both those listings, I talked to Midwest and they haven't had any bad reports yet from the aftermarket replacement, so I'll probably go that route.
When you say rubbing, do you know exactly where this is occurring, the coils on the side of the magnet or? I saw this here:

and I guess you can "adjust" these, although room for adjustment is pretty small. This might be a different issue than rubbing?
You can try adjusting it, it could work. JBL had problems with these when new (also the 066).
Tried to fit new 033 diaphragm today, no go:
This fits ~2 1/4" 4 hole pattern. I have 2 other 033's that have this pattern.
The other set I have, one of which is not working properly, has a smaller 2" pattern. Crap. I'm ready to just fit something else in there, cut a new mounting plate or something and just be done with it. L150. I think it crosses at 4000Hz. Any suggestions guys?

I see this on a regular basis and the modification requires a dremel hi speed carbide spindle and elongate the brown diaphragm holes so as to accomodate front etschuteon. To align feed 1000-3000Hz sinewave lo level thru 3.3uf to tweeter terminals , add bostix glue to mounting area and slowly move diaphragm around so it ceases to "pole" or sound fuzzy . Hook up an microphone to oscilloscope and observe for maximum spl output , poling will indicte a tortured sine wave clean sine... dont move diaphragm and let set ..aligned ataraxia

Yea I thought about this. Not sure if I want to go thru all that work. As much as I like the sound of an 033, I have not heard a pair with aftermarket diaphragms. It may not *sound* all that worth it?
It might be smarter, and even might sound better, to just buy new 052Ti's. Only mounting holes need modifying.
