I've had this subwoofer for a number of years now, and loved it from day 1.
Just last week I noticed, when the stereo was off and all was quiet, that when I was just a foot in front of the sub, I heard it making noise, static sort of hiss although a bit coarser than "normal" hiss.
I don't remember if it did this all along, but I kind of doubt it.
Is this normal or should I have it serviced? The darn thing weighs like 200 lbs, so taking it someplace would be non-trivial.
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.

Follow Ups:
Static or a HUM?
They are two different issues
HUM would be a ground loop
Static/cracking sometimes a pulse or popping is not uncommon in servo
sub setups
I'm not the original owner, but maybe I'll contact Velodyne and see what they have to say.

I've had an F-1500 servo sub in my HT system for many years. A couple of years ago the low level gritty noise became progressively louder and louder until it was noticable from the sitting area during moderately quiet passages in the soundtrack. I obtained a return authorization from Velodyne and sent to their facility via FedEx. After assessing a small fee, they repaired the amp (no one I spoke with knew what was done) and returned it using the same transit method. The repaired unit is as quiet and robust sounding as when new.

I have older 1200 series servo subs. Both pick up local radio stations at a very low level. I tried putting a .01uf cap across the inputs(speaker level) and it helped a bit
I've got the DD18 and if I listen close I can hear a tiny bit of noise. It isn't anywhere near enough to hear from a normal distance. I think it might actually be ambient noise reflecting off the big ol' paper cone.
but goes away when I power off the plate amp.

I have had a pair of HGS-10 subs for years. They tend to make a low growling sound, sort of like an animal in the corner. If it gets louder, look out.
I got blasted out of bed one night when something went wrong on the sub, it sounded like an earthquake. I've replaced a plate amp every other year on those. The last time one of them would make a howling noise, then shut off. Both amp and driver had to be replaced, because the servo sensor went bad.
An old guy at Velodyne told me that the HGS-10 was too small for almost all rooms. They get overstressed and blow up. He said to go big, 18" was the size to buy, preferably two.
