Hi All,
I've been out of the shopping for speakers arena for quite some time. I've gone from the original B&W 601s, to Dyn Audience 50s, to two project speakers, and now would lke to shop around for something prebuilt again.
I'm seeking two way mini monitors with 6-7" woofs. Something that can play down to 50Hz with some level of coherence, with mids that aren't too forward. I'm powering them with 150W of solid state. Music is rock, progressive metal, pop, jazz fusion, some classical.
What's hot these days under $1k?
The GMA Europas are still the small speaker to beat in my opinion.

I forget the model number, but it's gotten great reviews.
I heard it the other day at a local dealer, it was very nice.
I am yet to hear a bookshelf speaker in the $600 and below range which satisfied my requirements.Perhaps there are some in the 1k range but then who wants bookshelf when we can have a Monitor Audio RS6 floorstander which will blow away the standmounts at that price?
Happy searching.
must be numerous others. Many monitor speakers have useful bass down to 40 Hz (using -10 dB as the cut-off point).

I believe Paradigm has also in some British Magazine 'Shoot-Outs'
And 'mini monitors' will typically be too small for 6-7" drivers.
There are some exceptions in floorstanders of course, but with bookshelves, don't believe the specs. There's hardly anything out there that can properly reproduce 50Hz. Get a sub-woofer and a pair of PSB B25s given the music you like. Might not be a good match for your amp though - what amp do you have?
I sold a pair of Dynaudio 1.8MKII's for a pair of his JTM's.
Wonder how these compare with well known speakers like Joseph Audio and Merlin et al.?
Enjoy
Lots of speakers will reproduce 50Hz and lower accurately. I own 2 pair of speakers that will easily do this.
What speakers are you referring to in your assertion? I think the National Research Council Anechoic Chamber will quite easily measure accurately below 50Hz. It's one of the premier acoustical measuring facilities in the world.

Graham

Incorrect assurtion. Most floor standers do 80HZ quite well. My PSB Image T45s go down to 40 Hz with authority and here are the curves measured at the NRC facilities to proove it.

Prove it? What is the reverberation time at 40 Hz in a small anechoic chamber and what is done to account for this in your measurement curve?
What reverb? Its anoechic meaning nzereo, none, zip reverb of anykind. Reverb is reflection of sound.
To work to the lowest frequencies.
Having said that, the other poster is confused in this and many other posts of his.
As you indicate the NRC facilities are used by many Canadian and US manufacturers...because the facilities are excellent.
Did you not click on the link? The measurements were taken at the NRC's facilities and not by me. Yeah I know your gobsmacked and you should be for over generalizing. Nice try though.."E" for effort
Do tell us more of what you know!
It would appear so by the different non Canadian speaker manufactures that use our facility.
I'm using a pair of Dynaudio Focus 110, they are more dependent on positioning because of their low bass output and take about 250 hours of running in. I have mine about 25" away from back/side walls, so far I have about 65 hours on them, the bass is getting better, I'm pleased with them.
Regards,
Mike
Thanks for the reco. I remember burning in the A50s. Though the A50s had a larger woofer, I remember their bass response being surprisinly good at low levels. Dynamics were a slight issue with them (they didn't snap, lacked excitement), but that was about 7 years ago or so. I suppose they have improved woofer designs now. I'll definitely check them out, thanks!
