Hello everybody -
I've decided to consider adding supertweeters. I've read fairly extensively on the theoretical advantages of having them in a system, but was wondering if any inmates have done any comparisons between the tannoy, townshend, murata, or other brands/models. I've read that Vienna Acoustics recently chose the murata to integrate with one of their newer designs, which is a pretty strong recommendation. I currently use Silverline Bolero speakers if anyone thinks that might be influental towards the choice. Any insights greatly appreciated, thanks.
Good listening,
Mark
I tried a set of supertweeters (AV123)and this addition altered the sound of my speakers to their detriment. If they simply added highs with no other affect that would have been just right.
Thanks for the information, guys. The Esotars do go out to 28kHz if memory serves. They were the primary reason I chose the Boleros. I'm just trying to boost the performance if I can without buying a new, more expensive pair of main speakers. I'll keep reading and listening when I can - and yeah, the Tannoys are way costly. (I suppose if you're buying the Prestige line that their super is designed to integrate with you're not supposed to care about money). Appreciate the reminder about phase cancellation as well. Thanks all for the input.
You must have also read about the destructive interference patterns generated by placing another tweeter several inches away from your existing ones. The interference will occur at frequencies that you can actually hear, so I'm not sure what type of improvement you're expecting and it it will be offset by the problems that it creates.
I have auditioned VA The Music with Murata super-tweeter on it and its performance is just stunningly good! (I personally prefer the Music to WATT 8/Puppy which seems to be of similar prices)
HOWEVER, your Silverline Bolero speakers have the famous Dynaudio Esotar tweeters!
Why do you think you need a pair of super-tweeters? Not airy enough? No high frequency extension? Upper octaves not natural? My guess is: not owing to the tweeters but the others...
Best regards
Dan
I use Fountek ribbons, actually the cheapest model with the thinnest ribbon because it has greater extension than the more expensive ones.
Nice to have them but not a huge difference. They are VERY sensitive to phase so placement relating to the tweeter voice coil is quite important.
The Tannoy models at least (haven't checked the prices for others) are ridiculously overpriced IMO.
