I just read a very convincing article on TNT Audio promoting active speakers. I guess it's worth pursuing further if/when I upgrade. Certainly Naim and Linn promote active, and AVI has gone completely active in their speaker line.Question: aside from Quad and Wharfdale, what other active studio monitors should I consider? A quick Google search turned up Zzounds, which also sells Behringer, M-Audio, Yamaha, KRK, ec.
Key criteria here: they be relatively inexpensive and not ruthless (since most pro monitors are ruthless)

.
I have heard some of Tannoy's studio monitors, some of which are active. Very fine sound indeed.

You should give ATC's a listen. They might not suit your tastes, as they are above all neutral. Listen to the newer SCM 11's or 19's.

If not, a studio monitor may not work for you. If you listen in a domestic environment and you do buy studio monitors, go with a pair designed for "midfield" listening. Midfield monitors are'nt always cheap. However, the Quad 12L can be sometimes be found new for less than the $1500 retail price if you look around - sometimes as low as $1000.

They are not cheap but definitely worth the price - not ruthlessly revealing either.
many self-powered monitors are primarily designed for near field use.
Depends on what you want to do with them, then.
Cheers,
David
