I'm looking for minimonitors that are cheap and have real wood veneer. Budget $600 or less, preferably. Not much on audiogon at the moment, either.
Ideas?
ERA and Usher S-520 are the only ones that come to mind ...
Try and find a second hand pair of Sonus Faber Concertino, Concertino Home or Concertino Domus speakers.
Nice build, finish and sound.
Worth a look.
Cherry veneered speakers on sale for $175!!!
They have metalic cones. Their veneer may not be real wood, but your first priority should be the quality of the speaker's sound.
If you're interested in a weekend project, perhaps consider a GR Research kit. Check out the GR Research forum over at AudioCircle:

You could get an AV/1 kit w/ Sonicaps and Mills Resistors:

And have some custom cabinets built for you:

(I think the Dyed Curly Maple are killer)
I'm not sure about either, in the one case whether any Polks under 600 pair have real wood, but I would look into it.
And in the other case the Gini monitors might have design or qc issues...but I think it's real wood.
I forgot the little Ushers have real wood. How much better do you think you can do on your budget than those, anyway?
I don't know the ERA but the Usher is excellent. I first heard three years ago and have been impressed each time since that I have heard them.

Either the L series or the L2. Both are real wood and very nice.

The Quad's are lots of bang for the buck.
They are one level below a Spendor, Harbeth, PMC, etc. But a LOT cheaper.
Energy RC-10s.. the cherry veneer is really nice. The black ash not so much. Tweeters are nice, bass can be a little boomy. YMMV, but I liked mine with NAD, McCormack and Primaluna PL2.
AV123.com has its ELT525s for $299. The cherry veneered ones are on sale for even less $175. These are great sounding speakers too.
Check them out @
