I can't believe it....Bose and Magnepan in the same sentence. In reality, Bose speakers have no right to be even mentioned on this or any postings of audiophile intent. Bose is a consumer driven company, not an audiophile driven company. That being said, Vandersteen should also be on your list of auditions. To me, there is no speaker that gives as much value as that line...no matter at what price break.
Question for you then, by any chance, have you also heard either a Dahlquest DQ-10 or Ohm Walsh? If so, how do they compare?
I had a friend in Texas who was big on Vandersteens, I've never gotten to hear one unfortunately.
And I do have another "Bose Thought" you may appreciate. I travel most weeks, fly way too much. The Bose Noise cancelling headsets have become more and more popular with other road warriors due to the excessive background noise. I'm a part time musician and need to preserve my hearing. But not only do the Bose cost way too much for quality of music, they also do the noise cancellation by introducing frequencies to mask the noise. Well, how can you do that without messing up the music. Then since it's technically powered, it runs afoul of the airlines "no electronic devices" totally unfounded requirement.
My solution? Sennheiser HD280 Pros. Very good sound isolation without playing sonic games, plus sound really nice - for a whole lot less. "Don't leave home without 'em".
