Thanks for all the comments and especially Rob and Ozzy. One mistake I made was the sensitivity of the Klipsch, they are (98dB) not 91 so that could be causing a lot of confusion. I thought I remembered reading the sensitivity was 91dB but after checking the specs again I was wrong.
I can audition speakers but considering where I live I doubt in home auditioning would work, I'm a good distance from any decent audio shops. I'm outside Chicago and do plan to listen to a few more setups but I don't think dragging my amp and pre around is a great idea either but I might look into it.
More research is in order but the few posts I've made here and especially this one, and reading others has given me a better understanding of where to start.
Thanks to everyone,
Brian

The cause seems clear, your amp has a .33Volt input sensitivity. With almost any cd player you will be getting over 1.5 Volts
See specs from Canary site below.

I guess my next question and comment is what do you look for as far as voltages go when matching up amps, pre, speakers? I don't even have a CD player now, listen to vinyl but I will get a CDP again at some point. The specs on my preamp don't give an output voltage but they give an output impedance of 1600 Ohms and a gain of 9 dB.
Synergy is important and I'm trying to figure where to start and it seems matching the components up so their voltages and impedance matches goes a long way toward getting the most of the whole system.
As I stated below I'm going to try a pair of Proac 2.5's in my system, picking them up Tuesday or at least that's the plan. They have a sensitivity of 86db and I've read many posts that they're awesome with tube amps. I know it's the sound that matters and not a bunch of specs but obviously getting things close makes the rest easier, so I'm learning a little at a time.

Your speakers are quite efficient (for speakers) and one or two watts can drive you out of the room, especially if mated with an amplifier of less than 1 volt input sensitivity. High efficiency in a speaker is neither a bad or good trait, per se, but your thread has been a good lession (and exercise) to the importance of "equipment matching". So, thank *you*.
