Is there anyone who knows the difference(s) between the Spendor SP2/3 and the SP2/3E ? The history chart on the Spendor site shows the 'E' version is introduced in 1994.
Are all SP2/3 from that time on actually SP2/3E's. ?
I ordered a pair of SP3/1p's a few weeks ago but decided today to go for the SP2/3. I use a Copland CTA-402 amplifier. Is there anyone who has heard the same combination?Regards and thanks,
Armand
The Spendor naming convention is like the Antique Sound Labs
naming convention: difficult to remember, represents nothing
(at least I don't get it).
Just got an email from Spendor. This is the whole text:Dear Sir,
Thankyou for you interest in our loudspeakers.
Well spotted.
The SP2/3E is an 'enhanced' version of the SP2/3. The changes
were mainly cosmetic, but included OFC internal cables, reduced external
magnetic field and a bevelled hardwood front cabinet edge. All models are
'E' specification even though this model is generally only referred to
without the 'E' as it is not really a different model. This is the case for
all Classic series models.regards,

I just recieved a pair of the 2/3s. I've never heard of the 2/3E. Its not even listed on the spendor website. Where did you see it mentioned?
It is a bit confusing, but on the corporate Spendor website you can find the SP2/3E in the history chart. It should be introduced in 1994. See:
http://www.spendor.mcmail.com/history.htmThis Swiss dealer has also the SP2/3E in it's range. See:
http://www.algorythme.com/spendor/classic.htmlIt is possible that all SP2/3's from 1994 and later are actually SP2/3E's....
On some pictures there is a visual difference in the LF/MF driver.
Sometimes you see a white colored cone and on some pictures you see a black cone . On all SP1/2 you see a black cone, which should be the same unit as used in the SP2/3 (E???)Regards,
Armand
wish i had a spendor dealer here in atlanta so i can listen to them as well. I like a company with a consistent record of positive reviews and legendary reputation for quality. The 1/2 3-way monitors definitely sounds like a worthwhile listen. Supposed to be among the "best" monitors out there.
Audio Essence in Kennesaw, GA is a Spendor dealer.
I live in the Netherlands and Spendor is not on the market here, so I ordered my pair from the German importer/ dealer which is not really close to whre I live. But I did only listen to the SP3/1p and not to the SP2/3. I switched to the SP2/3 only because I think my room (40m2) is too big for the SP3/1p. (Thanks to all Spendor fans on audioasylum :-) )The SP2/3 has it's bass port on the front which allows me to put it closer to the wall than the SP3/1p.

Armand
Armand,What were your impressions of the 3/1P ? the 402 is a great amp by the way - I used to have the 401 some time ago.
The SP3/1p is IMHO an excellent speaker. I went auditioning these speakers with my Rogers LS3/5a in mind which I sold a few weeks ago. I love the LS3/5a (I also had the AB1 subs) but my room was just too big for these babies. My dealer in Germany (who is also the Spendor importer) advised me to come listen to the SP3/1p's.
So I did: I bought them. I also traded in my Copland CTA-401 and bought the CTA-402. The SP3/1p has much more body than the LS3/5a, even with the AB1 subs. Mids of the SP3/1p are excellent and the upper-mids sound a bit softer than the LS3/5a's. Overall a very complete sound , also the base was very convincing (I like good speakers, not boom-boxes...)The Copland 402 I listened to was pretty new so the sound I heard was getting better (more lively, more sparkling) every minute, but I did not heard the 'end-result'.
While waiting for the ordered SP3/1p the guys in this forum made me think about the SP2/3 :-) My wife agreed on switching the order. Just because of my room size. I am also a bit scary since I did not hear the combination with the Copland CTA-402.
I'll let you know when it's all there. Regards, Armand
Thanks for that - interesting. As far as driving the 2/3 - i am sure the 402 will be able to do so with little problem. Going from memory, the old 401 was able to drive a wide range of speakers, despite its 30 or so watts. The 2/3 represent an easy load and I'm sure the result will be very good.Good luck,
Cato
