In Reply to: RE: Speakers to match a 24 watt 300BXLS tube amp.? posted by Spectre1 on January 29, 2008 at 20:37:57
As you may know, 300B amps like high/benign impedance loads with the emphasis on benign whether they are single ended, PP or parallel.
Taxing a 300B amp with low impedance dips and average efficiency speakers will mitigate the "magical" qualities that the venerable 300B tubes are capable of delivering.
I had excellent results with a GS 300B/WE SE amp and Cabasse Farella 401 speakers. This was one of THE most musical systems I have ever put together to date although I must divulge that a sub was used via electronic x-over @ 68hz/36db octave thus relieving the 300B from low bass duties.
My advice, keep the efficiency of the speakers above 94db and definately keep a close eye on the impedance undulations so as not to tax the amp.
Cheers
Follow Ups:
nor a 94db.+ efficiency speakers is needed for Jota. The Jota has a bit more grunt in that the speaker choices are wider than a typical 300B amplifier. ( But yes. It's still load sensitive )
Sometimes, I can get away with even a tougher load with standmounts or smallish 2 way floorstanders. ( smaller and less drivers to control, I suppose )
My point was that one would not want to push the headroom of a 300B design, whether it be SE, PP or parallel as that degrades the "magic" but hey...to each is own :-)
There is nothing like a SE 300B in full undistorted song that makes the heart leap with joy! Ask me how i know this...
I agree that 300B's has the magic midrange. And a few I have heard even had an excellent bass agility.
I probably don't mind using one if I can find a decent speakers for them to shine. Many would meet the *number* requirements, but often, they are not the kind of speakers I can live with.

Ah, my point exactly!! The Cabasse Ferrella 401's were a direct radiating speaker with the efficiency and the sonic goods to allow the SE 300B to achieve full song :-)
