Pianos are indeed very different. I accompanied my daughter recently to a piano store where she tried several baby grands. Their top price was $65,000 Bosendorfer. The sound of this instrument just floored me. It could play softest pianissimos with beautiful intimacy, and project authority and power when played forte. Everything in between was as perfect. However, my daughter prefered $25,000 Yamaha that sounded somewhat muted to me. She explained that Bosendorfer is for Romantic music, and Yamaha is for Bach and Mozart. She tried a few others, but with most of them from the first few cords it was clear that the instrument is no good.
Surprisingly, the character of piano sound comes through clearly with a good recording and playback. So if you don't like it, it may not be your speakers' blame. I particularly dislike metallic sound of many Steinways, the brand most used by professional musicians.
Follow Ups:
I have owned B&W Matrix 801 series 3's since 1993. I have no problem discerning through my 801's a Bechstein played by Bolet, American Steinway played by Arrau or even the Bosendorfer. Each have a very distinct sound world.
Recently I started a search for a new speaker. But, so far speaker
X highly reviewed $6700 monitor, $9000 speaker Y on the TAS short list
does not come close to correct tonal accuracy, weight etc.of the piano.
For those with piano's---Do you have a speaker of choice that brings you
close to the sound of the piano?
Thanks.
I don't have a piano but last Christmas I went at ralatives' place with a piano, the kid was playing with it and it sounded exactly the same as my Orion speaker.
Unless you own recordings of that particular piano in that room it shouldn't sound "exactly the same as my Orion speaker."
no box speaker i ewer heard get you near, the Soundlab A1/M1s are the closest, and if you can swing the U1 you are a bit closer. The A1s and the U1s do not have the bottom authority of a boesendorfer, they get close to a Steinway weight. Maybe a majestic, although i can not tell you for sure. The Magnepans do not quite have the speed, they are nice, but blurr the attack. Nothing will get you that enveloping resonant quality that you hear in a concert hall with a 10' grand on stage. Sorry.dee

Should have done a DBT on those damned pianos!
I have experienced the same piano not the same effect a lot of times. We have a local technician taking care of our Mason Hamlin A, sometimes his partner comes out to tune the beast, and it sounds like a different instrument, it is in tune in both cases, but David manages to make it sound more brilliant and zingy, while his partner makes it mellow and melodic. Strange, they cannot tell me why it happens, it is just the way they do it.
