I would like to relate my experience with Carolina Audio JTM monitors. I started out with a conrad-johnson Evolution 2000 amplifier. 200wpc broke them in nicely, but I started playing around with chip amps, and got rid of the boat anchor(not that the c-j is a bad piece--quite the contrary). I found that the chip amps had a more engaging sound within their power range. First, a 47 Labs Shigaraki integrated, then some Scott Nixon 40wpc monoblocks. I had the opportunity for an interesting trade--my 47 Labs for a VTL ST 60, which has two 6550s per channel wired in triode/PP configuration. This produced 42wpc, and apparently a lot more current. A marvelous upgrade. After a couple of years, I was able to audition a pair of Tom Tutay modded Altec-Lansing 1570Bs. Wowsers! Like tapping into the sun for a power supply. The extra headroom increased dynamic speed of the CAs and gave them a greater sense of ease in reproducing complex orchestral passages. I'm curious to know what experience others might have had. with varying amounts of power and amplifier types.
Follow Ups:
Although the JTMs are not that picky abour amplifiers- easy to drive although not high efficiency- I have to concur that they respond well to higher power amps. Plinius 9200 was an excellent combination. Also work well with Hypex/Ucd type switching amps. Currently, driving them with a Consonance 888 integrated (4 KT88 tubes per side- 60W ultralinear). I find these high power amps help with dynamics at lower volume and add a bit of ease to the midrange presentation.
JTS Jordan Tall Subs.
I use a Carver LightStar 2.0 with a AirTight ATL-10A passive preamp.
While I am impressed with how they sound at low volumes.
They sure can play LOUD with all that power. 300 watts a channel
Astounding to see how robust the Jordan driver really is. My Altecs have two 811As in push/pull and produce 170w of triode power each. I have heard the CAs with a pair of Western Electric amps that put out 20 or 12 watts depending on how they are wired. This pair was in pentode mode at 12wpc and we were able to fill a large two car garage that had been converted to an audio room. Still, the high power has me hooked.
I'm also waiting for a pair of t-line subs from Ronnie to use with my JSMs.
Your going to feel sorry for all those so called Audiophile's
that think their's no good bass below 50hz.
Those poor misguided individuals don't know what their missing.
Especially at low volume.
Boom, boom ,thud. Boom, boom, thud.
Not here baby!!!
Yes! So, what was the make and model of the truck that just passed outside the cathedral on that last recording?
