What speaker is better than Infinity IRS Beta Which I own. A lot has changed over the years. Some Audiophiles tell me Thiel top of the line speakers are better Note I have never heard Thiel speakers
Follow Ups:
I still love my Betas, they now are a part of my "bedroom" system. They still do everything well, they still sound best (to me) with tubes on the mid/tweeter panels.
But for the crazy good live-level tuneful bass serious spl live sound, nothing I've ever heard touches the Nearfield Acoustics Pipedreams.
I have a pair of Reference 18's and I can truly say that to my ears, it is the best I've heard.
otari :-)
My mother-in-law, after seeing the Levinson 33H amps in my listening room: "Those are the nicest electric room heaters I've ever seen".
You must have A Huge bedroomHP Speakers TAS
I was an Infinity RS1b owner for about 17 years and know the Betas well. I too looked long and hard for a replacement. My search naturally took me to the different Genesis models and to the Nola line of speakers. But, they were way out of my price range. Fortunately my search finally ended. These are the new RM-V60s and VLA bass towers in my room. I can honestly say that these are not just a good replacement, but far exceed what I had known previously. I have no doubt that this system would hold it's own against other reference systems, new or old, such as the IRS and Genesis top models. The Beta is a fine system, I know this. So were my RS1bs, but this new system here is in an entirely different league.
If you are considering a replacement, I suggest that you let the Betas go while they are still at the top of their game. That is what I did with my Infinities, as time is not often kind to older speakers. Replacement drivers and components are getting harder and more expensive to find. This is especially true for the Beta.
I found my IRS beta's At Lyric Hi Fi 10 years ago used $5.0000 Near Mint. How is the low end on RM-V60s They look nice
It is world class. Just by seeing what they look like it is easy to imagine that they can produce bass. However, it is the quality of this bass that makes them world class. The designer, Brian Cheney, emphasized speed, transient response, high sensitivity and output levels, along with an inert cabinet to achieve it.
The cabinets are two inches thick and weigh in at over 400 lbs each. They stand about 68 inches tall. A recent measurement had the harmonic distortion number of 1.7% @ 20Hz/1W.
If everything's working fine and you like the sound of the speakers, why change? The IRS Betas were outstanding speakers in their day and I would be willing to bet they stand up with some of the finest available today. I'd keep 'em.
