I have a pair of Boston Acoustics A400 speakers that I am no longer using and would like to sell. I've done some research on the internet and I find posts that say things like "I've found a pair of BA A400's at a fair price" or "if the seller is asking a fair price I'd take them", but unfortunately I have not been able to figure out what might be a fair price.
I'd be very grateful to hear opinions on what might be a fair asking price for the pair.
Thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
...they invariably need new surrounds, all four woofers. Come to think of it, the mids not outta the question (6.5"?). How's the condition of yours?
I recently paid $60/ea. for two new woofs (10") for my A100s, straight from Boston. I'm sure the 8" in the 400s go for $50/ea., at least in that neighborhood. Yeah, you can re-foam, but not exactly original.
How are the cabinets? I almost pulled the trigger on a pair of 400s from CA., but said woofers needed work, as well as the boxes having some issues. Quite frankly, I don't have the room for them anyway!
So... how much are they worth? The original price was $900 in 1979 (not sure which series you have), but the pair I was lusting after were $350, needing a lot of repair.
Not too good in the W.A.F. department.
VERY good sounding, AFAICR.
Good luck!
I'm not sure which series I have either.
I'm the original owner and they've only been moved a few times so the walnut cabinets are in near perfect condition. Every time they've been moved I've packed them up into their original boxes, which I still have! Unfortunately, one of the boxes has sustained some pretty serious water damage, so it's unusable.
Just checked the condition of the drivers and, sure enough, the foam surrounds on all of them (woofers and mids alike) are in pretty bad shape. There are plenty of foam repair kits available for the A400's on Ebay for around $40, but I'm not sure how likely it is I'd find someone who'd be willing to go through that much trouble.
I'm not looking to make a quick buck as much as I am trying to find a good home for them and free up the space they're (uselessly) occupying now. I'd hate to have to just dump them at the local electronics recycling site, but that may be my only alternative. Although I guess I might as well list them on craigslist or something first and see if a local Los Angeles A400 nut turns up who might be willing to give them the extra care they'll require...
All the electrolytics in the networks will have to be replaced too.Packing and shipping (safely) is also a big issue.
